List of Serious Sins

I teach RCIA and am often asked if a sin is “Mortal” I understand and explain that the same sin can me mortal or venial depending on full knowledge and consent to commit it. However, I am looking for a good objective list that may exist that talks of, “what is a mortal sin” or “is this sin mortal?” Any help is appreciated.

They say that one of the characteristics of a mortal sin is its a “serious” offence.

Can you please tell me how “serious” is serious?

This should help and note how they refer back to the ten commandments.
This talks about what makes it grave or mortal (same thing).

Once you are done with that, then go to this and scroll through the questions. It is an indepth examination of conscience based on the 10 commandments. If you say “yes” to any of the questions, then it is time to head to confession to acknowledge those things.

Oh, and never put off for next week what you could do this week.
 
A mortal sin is one which results in d*mnation. I.e., if you commit one and die before you hit the confessional, guess where you go. The seven deadly sins are good examples: lust, sloth, gluttony, wrath, and so on.

Do you ahve to go to confessional in order to be forgiven?

Can’t you just pray to god personally?

…I don’t like confession…

Many might argue that it’s too strict, or that numerous sins listed under mortal aren’t mortal at all. But it works for me. I do my best, but I’m still just another sinner.

I thought the Seven Deadly Sins were the main sins from which all others branch off, not mortal in themselves. Also, as Evanescence said: If you die with a mortal sin on your soul and you didn’t get to Confession, but you were truly sorry for it, do you still go to Hell? That…doesn’t sound right to me.

It’s easier to say what features of a mortal sin make it mortal (say) than to give a single comprehensive list of sins. Just as it is easier to say what features identify birds as birds, than to list them all.​

The reason being, that sins differ according to the attitude of the person committing them: one person’s venial sin of lying, can be mortal in some one else.

People differ in knowledge, in moral character, in graces received, in their circumstances, in their temptations. So their culpability - which is what you are asking about - differs.

There is no list. It’s an impossibility. Life is not that simple 🙂 ##

If you truly sorry (sincere contrition) for your mortal sins and die before getting to confession, you wouldn’t go to hell. This is not to say that you delay confession. Do it as soon as you can!
