Please remember fasting and abstaining are two different things, and fasting is only required on two days a year - Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Any other fasting is purely voluntary.

Why are you looking for a list of snacks. Fasting is very simple on the required two days a year. I read all the threads on this topic and people are talking about weighing food and counting calories.
Some people are trying to make this so complicated. How hard is it just to cut down the quantity of food on these two days compared to what is normally eaten.
I accidentally wrote ā€œsnacksā€ in my original post, oops!😊 What I meant to ask was ā€œwhat do you all eat for your 2 small mealsā€? I’m pretty short and thin so my small meals are going to be smaller then a large man. This is my husbands first year as a Catholic and he was trying decide what to eat and how much. It kinda got me thinking of what others eatā€¦šŸ˜€

We are supposed to eat food which have not been processed much. Highly processed foods or intricate recipes should give way to simply prepared foods. Rich foods, spices, sauces and flavorings should be avoided. Think like John the Baptists - locust and wild honey - yum! šŸ˜›

I try to stick with raw veggies and fruits. Hard boiled eggs are a good source of protein and easily prepared.

Perfect hard cooked eggs: Place eggs in saucepan and cover with water 1 inch above eggs. Rapidly bring to a boil, removing from heat and covering tightly as soon as it comes to a boil. Let stand exactly 17 minutes. Cool rapidly by draining hot water, adding ice, etc. Enjoy. šŸ™‚

This is what I do, but because I’m at a high altitude, I let the eggs stand for 25 minutes. I never seem to have ice around, so I drain the hot water, cool the eggs somewhat with cold tap water, then cover with same - let stand for 5 minutes. Perfect hard cooked eggs every time!

If you still have trouble with the shell sticking to the egg, use a push pin to poke a hole in the center of the large end before cooking.

Can you tell I’m used to writing about cooking? 😃

How about brushing a red bell pepper with some olive oil and putting it under the broiler for a few minutes? That’s a tasty snack any day in my book.

One of my favourite Good Friday fast ā€œsmall mealā€ is a baked potato sprinkled with a little steak spice and some sour cream, accompanied by my hemina of wine 😃

When we were poor in college we used to buy a sack of potatoes and use all the condiments from fast food stores.

Mustard from the convenience store was German food
Soy Sauce was Chinese food
Hot sauce from Taco Bell was Mexican food.
Maple syrup from IHOP was breakfast.
And so forth.

I never liked the French baked potato. Mayonnaise is abhorrent to me.

Was Russian food just straight Vodka?

I have a book, ā€œTwelve Months of Monastery Soupsā€ by Brother Victor-Antoine d’Avila -LaTourrette. Probably available on Amazon or some such. It is a collection of vegan and vegetarian soups. Most could be adapted to use meat or at least meat broth. I use vegetable broth. These are very good to use for one or two meals a day, depending upon whether it is a fast day. Just finished ā€œSt. Scholastica Soupā€ yesterday. Recipe said four servings, but husband and I each had 4 meals from it. We have tried others in the book and like them. I have avoided the Garlic soup. šŸ™‚

Here is one I use…

2 carton low sodium vegetable broth
1 15oz can low sodium chick peas
1 large can whole peeled tomato
1 cup uncooked medium pasta shells
2 clove garlic
1 small onion
1+ Tbsp Thyme
1+ Tbsp Basil
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 Tbsp oil

Prep

Drain and crush tomatoes. Reserve 1/4 cup liquid for color.
Rinse chick peas

Cooking

Bring broth to boil in a large pot. Add shells and cook until tender, about 8 minutes.

While shells cook, chop garlic and onion. Cook garlic in oil until it just starts to brown and then add onion. Cook onion until it begins to become transparent.

When shells are done, add onion/garlic, chick peas, crushed tomato, reserved tomato liquid, thyme, basil and pepper. Bring to boil.

Serve hot with a large loaf of crusty bread that people can rip apart and dip.

There is also ā€œFrom a Monastery Kitchenā€ by the same author.

But garlic is GOOD! I put it in lots of foods. 😃
Well we call it vitamin G in our house. It is just the soup seems a little heavy on the garlic! Love having the recipe though1

Tim, Thanks for the recipe. It looks good!

And Bonnie, the earlier book by Brother Antoine is on my list to purchase some time. Thanks

I’ve noticed very often that garlic that’s cooked in a recipe is often tamed, so much more can be used than one would think possible.

A tablespoon of chocolate chilli mixed into your favorite ground coffee is sure light up your day. Serve with Fig Newtons. Tripple Berry Newtons are even better.

I’m struggling today with the fast. I’m not diabetic, but I have to eat little and often or I get shaky (my sister is the same, I wonder if it’s familial).

I’m trying to break up my two small amounts of food into even smaller amounts so I can eke it out. I have a stomach upset today, which isn’t helping and I don’t think I’ll be able to attend church this afternoon (because if I go, I may have to run out).

Feel a bit of a failure, really as I’d planned to attend the whole Triduum and fully observe the fast. 😦

several cups of water and a cup of choc soy milk, maybe banana later for lunch or not…
fish for dinner however the wife makes it with sides, and a slice of lemon pie…

We are only required to abstain from meat during lent…BUT we are advised to give up some sort of penance each Friday year round… instead of trying to be creative, it is easier for me to just have no meat every Friday plus I figure having less meat once a week would lower my fat and cholesterol numbers.

Don’t feel like a failure, just unite your suffering (even if it’s small) to Christ’s own passion.

If your upset stomach related is not likely to be contagious, attend the passion service and sit at the end of a pew near the restrooms. If you are contagious, stay home and read the passion in your bible.

As for food to help with the shakes (I get the same way when I’m teaching, which I’m not today), eat a banana or a spoonful of peanut butter. You can also drink a glass of milk or a cup of broth (made with bouillon) without breaking your fast.

God bless you!

Gertie

Thank you Gertie, I appreciate your kind words. I ended up emailing our priest as I felt drained this afternoon. I apologised for my failures, he said some inspiring and encouraging words, as ever. He’s a very wise man.

I read the Passion at home, and have eaten very little so far today. I didn’t think about drinking milk, that’s a great idea!

Thank you again. šŸ™‚
