Atheists can sometimes have intelligent, well-articulated reasoning. I like atheists because they show that the truth does not depend on being intelligent and articulate.

“5. They generally don’t become suicide bombers”

I actually saw that comment a few times here so I thought I’d mention there are no catholic suicide bombers so lets stop putting in the word “generally”. It doesn’t happen

And no one acting in the name of the Pope/Catholicism or quoting from the Catechism ever committed similar acts (And don’t bring up the example of the defensive war call the Crusades or some of the meanies that took part, they acted contrary to church directives)

I find it odd to list reasons that I like atheists. I have no list of things that atheists all have in common to admire. Not that there is a list of stuff in commom not to admire either! I could say I admire that the JW is determined to go out there and share their faith or that the Muslim is praying five times a day, but I know of nothing about atheists in general that they all do or aspire to do, short of breathe and your basic things like that. All I know of them is that they deny the existence of God, which is not helpful for the current question.

I guess I like them because they are human, and are worthy of respect and every care.

They typically don’t tithe to their favorite secular causes…so I guess that’s good…

Have to disagree with you on that one. There are over a billion Catholics in the world, and I think it is safe to say that there have been more Catholics throughout time than there have been of any other single religion. To say that there has **never **been a person say that they were going to blow something up in the name of the Catholic Church, is stretching it.

Secondly, the **DEFENSIVE **war the Crusades? I’ve clearly read the wrong history books if those were all defensive wars.

Thirdly, I never said “The Church generally doesn’t condone blowing people up.” I said Catholics (Historically speaking over 1.5 billion people) generally don’t. Perhaps I should have said, “almost exclusively” or “to a near degree entirely”, but I was tired, and typing quickly.

Fourthly and finally, oh come on! I came up with 20 compliments about the Catholic Church and you nit pick over one word? Even calling that one a bad compliment, I still gave you **19 **other ones.

I really tried on that list, what about cutting me some slack.

Everstruggling,

LOVED your list! Especially #16… how sweet that you refrenced the Blessed Virgin Mother! 😉 (she loves you too by the way!)

CM
( :o That’s embarrassing, I had to go re-read the list, to see what you meant.)
Thank-you! Like I said before I really like your list too.

I was speaking about atheists not Catholics.

Well, let’s see, besides the fact that they are also children of God, even if they don’t believe it, I have never had one steal my Bible or take my Rosary. 😃

ROTFL :tiphat:

Okay, got to say. I’m a little surprised that there are so many people that have to struggle so hard to come up with things they like about atheists. (Maranatha and Carol Marie came up with some great ones. I’ve got to give credit.) We’re not that bad.
Well it is difficult because the group is defined by the belief, “there is no god” and there is nothing else to unite them. I know only two athiests and they are as different as night and day. One did try to ‘convert’ me and the other just doesn’t care.

But I’ll give it a try…
  1. They have a great deal of faith
  2. They are generally well educated
  3. They support keeping religion out of science (yes, I think this is a plus)
  4. Their extreme will keep this country from every becoming a religous state.
  5. They will often tell you upfront that they think you are an idiot for believing in God (allowing the conversation to end there instead of dragging on forever).
  6. Urmmm…they don’t typically block (stand in front of) the shelves at a Christian bookstore
  7. They won’t tell you that you’re going to hell if you don’t join their church.
  8. They often present and interesting point of view on issues
  9. No need to worry about converting them (as the only thing you can do is pray for them)
  10. I think these would be the ones to seek out the full truth in God once they do decide to convert…therefore the most likely to come to Catholism 😃
There, I found 10…and only a few are stretching it a bit 👍

They tend to have wonderful senses of humor.

Okay, I’ve thought and can’t come up with anything.
A closed mind is difficult to admire.
At least with agnostics, you can have a discussion.
I disagree. I have a closed mind. I believe that Catholicism is Truth and nothing anybody says will make me think differently. Agnostics, on the other hand, tend to be close-minded about open-mindedness. They tend to say “everybody should have an open mind.” You can’t discuss anything before addressing the existance of truth.

From Peter Kreeft’s Socrates Meets Jesus - The purpose of an open mind is like that of an open mouth. Close it on nutrition and truth, not poison and falsehood. But close it.

Interesting observations – an atheist is indeed a person with faith guided by reason. It does sound a lot like Catholicism, with some obvious differences of course. 😃

I suspect most atheists actually DO believe in God, but for some reason so desperately want to prove the opposite, or get kicks out of debating those who do believe in God.

I don’t believe in atheists.

Atheism is a hobby of mine and I could list a number of things that I detest about the crowd (generally), but here’s something I like: their skepticism. As a rule they don’t fall for flim flam artists and bunkum.

Hey Kevan,

Bunkum. What a great word !! I think I’m going to add that to my vocabulary. 🙂 CM

It’s fer sure that you’ll get plenty of chances to use it.

The later truncation of the word was “bunk,” as in Henry Ford’s supposed quotation “History is bunk.”

carol marie:
  1. Haven’t heard an Atheist say that the Hurricane was God’s way of letting us know that Ellen DeGeneres should NOT be hosting the Emmy awards.
If you are refering to Mr. Robertson, that Quote has been proven false. It’s just very believable since he has made simular asinine statements in the past.

They have an extraordinary amount of faith.

I hope I never meet a true atheist living their faith because such a person would have rationalized that there is no God and everything is an accident. Therefore, any emotions they have or any duty they feel to others are all just evolutionary, hormonally or some other form of biologically induced delusions which must be overcome and eradicated to achieve a truly rational existance.

Their only valid motiviation to do anything would be self-interest.

They would be a very sad creature to behold.

To the comment that atheists only act in self-interest, I have sometimes wondered if it isn’t true that everyone acts in self-interest. Lots of people try to be good so they don’t go to hell; that would be acting in self-interest. If a person does good because they love God, then they do good acts because it makes them feel good to please God - self-interest again.

So, in some ways it’s nice to see an atheist doing good works - they see value in good deeds without waiting for God’s reward or punishment (for omission).

You are correct, except the person who truly loves God doesn’t care if doing what pleases God makes them feel good, bad, or indifferent. I point to the lives of many saints as evidence, but the one that epitomizes it most (apart from the Virgin Mary) is St. Therese of Lisieux. She came as close to being as perfect in this regard as any person since Jesus and Mary themselves.
