Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Words from yesterday’s Gospel (Mt 17:1-90 - the Feast of the Transfiguration) remain in my heart and mind this morning:
Mary is Mother and Model for the whole Church – do we listen to Him as Mary did? Do we continue to listen, even when we do not understand?
Words from yesterday’s Gospel (Mt 17:1-90 - the Feast of the Transfiguration) remain in my heart and mind this morning:
Mary our Mother was not on the mount of Transfiguration with Jesus and the three disciples Peter, James and John, to hear the words spoken by the Father, but Mary had been listening to God for a long time before this scene. In Luke’s Gospel, we hear:…from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.”
…Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Lk 1:38)
…When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. (Lk 2 "15-19)
Before the Gospels recorded anything about Mary our Mother, I believe Mary listened to God’s Word prior to the Angel Gabriel’s Message . We can also listen to God’s Word giving us “Prefigures” of Mary in the Old Testament women like Hannah, Deborah, and others. The point, I want to make is that God’s Word became Incarate in the Womb of Mary our Mother. She listened to God before Jesus was born and after He came into the world as Her Son, how much more she kept all He said and did in her heart!…When His parents saw Him, they were astonished, and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for You with great anxiety.” And He said to them, “Why were You looking for Me? Did You not know that I must be in My Father’s house?” But they did not understand what He said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and His mother kept all these things in her heart. (Lk 2:48-51)
