I know the Catholic Church’s official music is Gregorian Chants and Church hymnals. Is it okay to listen to Gospel, Contemporary Christian and Christian Rock? You know joyful worship music, the type that Baptists, Evangelicals/Non-Denominationals, Pentecostals listen to? If not is it a sin? And do you listen, enjoy, or like this type of music?

I don’t know that Gregorian chant is the “official” music of the Catholic Church (though it is certainly given pride of place), but even so, that is primarily for use in liturgy. That does not make other forms of music sinful, even if they would perhaps be inappropriate for liturgical use.

I don’t particularly care for most CCM. Much of it seems a bit generic in my (completely subjective) opinion. I do like some Christian metal, though. :o

As long as it is theologically sound, there is nothing wrong with listening to that type of music. It’s a bit too shallow and light weight for my taste, but some people find it uplifting and consoling. 🤷

Contemporary Christian and Christian Rock are really sins against good taste!

:tsktsk:

At the risk of betraying my age, there was a time when Christian contemporary, rock and folk music were played on contemporary, rock and folk radio stations. Songs from Jesus Christ Superstar and GodSpell were played by most radio stations…way back in the 1970s.

Have Christian artists abandoned mainstream radio? R&B, Blue Grass, and Country seem to be the exceptions.

Radio stations won’t play Christian music. Trust me, most Christian bands would like to be on mainstream radio. I really wouldn’t consider Jesus Christ Superstar or GodSpell for that matter Christian music. I would say that Christian Rock is a good alternative, although it is hard to find talented Christian Rock bands. As someone who likes the style of Metal, Gothic, Industrial, and Alternative rock it is hard to find good bands that sing about things that I am okay with. There is nothing wrong with styles of music, just messages. It is a matter of opinion. Plus the Church does not condemn even secular music, as long as it is not causing you to sin.

If you ever get the chance, take a trip up to Steubenville for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. At least according to that school–and many others, including many parishes and retreats–there is definitely nothing wrong with contemporary worship music. I listen frequently to CCM and I have yet to hear anything griveously offensive to my Catholic faith. Some older Protestant hymns were specifically written to stick the Church in the eye, but most contemporary stuff is very ecumenical to the point of being almost generic.
