I love listening to Hillsong United, Matt Maher, Elevation Worship, groups like that. 1. I genuinely enjoy them, and 2. I think they’re a great worship aide.

That said, I’m wondering people’s thoughts on listening to music like that (with ear buds of course) during Adoration to aide in reflection and prayer time? I’ve seen people use their smartphones to read prayers/passages, so I don’t think this would be a problem so as long as it doesn’t interfere with others.

I’m also thinking that I’m free to worship and spend my time with Jesus as I want, so please don’t reply with, “no!!! totally not allowed!!!”

Like I said, just looking for some thoughts. Thanks.

Honestly, thats a good idea.
About the opinions of others, who cares. God knows your heart. Maybe get some Bluetooth earbuds if its that big of an issue for you.

When I was 19 or 20 and dead set on becoming the next great American author, I’d take my notebook and write my not related to the church not religious fiction teen book there. I wasn’t focused on God, but I liked feeling as if God was focused on me. Probably not theologically correct, but I was a young adult after all.

I love quiet praising music at Adoration. My favorite is the Litany of the saints. I feel very connected to all of Heaven when praying to/with/for the Saints during Adoration.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what Pope Frances and many others have said about daily quite time. For me anyways, Adoration seems to be a great time to put this into practice.

I’ve done that a couple times, myself. I find that no one can see my over-the-ear headphones because of my veil. I usually listen to chant - specifically the Benedictines of Mary. I find it helps to block out the ‘other’ noise. I do turn the music off after a while so I can waste time with Jesus.

I’ve also brought a journal with me a couple times. There are ‘moments’ I really need to record and I’ll forget as soon as I get to the car.

Of course, I really need to remember to bring tissue with me - I always end up crying because Our Lord is just waaaaaaay too beautiful for me!

The problem with earbuds is that often the sound will leak out of them. In a silent Adoration chapel, even a tiny noise can be super distracting.

I don’t see a big problem if you’re using earbuds and are there by yourself. When I am at Adoration all alone, I sometimes talk to Jesus softly out loud, or pray softly out loud. But if another person comes in, then I’m quiet again.

So I’d say it’s fine when you’re by yourself, but maybe don’t do it if others are also present at Adoration, just in case of sound leaking out.

Yes. I just finished listening to a talk by Fr. John Ricardo telling people the greatness of ‘wasting time with Jesus’. Pope Francis uses the same term.

One of my chapels actually has a handy box right there for people. I thought that was very thoughtful of the priest or whoever equipped the Chapel. Sometimes I get overwhelmed talking to Jesus and end up getting teary-eyed.

Maybe you could explain that to me. I don’t understand what it means.

Do you have the quote by Pope Francis that says this? I’m not doubting you and I’m not a Pope Francis-hater, I’m just curious as to what he said.

I have been known to call it “hanging out with Jesus”, as in, “Well, I’m gonna go hang out with Jesus for an hour now.”

See, I can understand that. But wasting time?

How can it ever be considered wasting time?
That’s kind of offensive to me.

Yes, that makes sense. Still, it is a strange way of saying it.

However, to get back to your OP question:

“To waste time — if I may say it — before the Lord, before the mystery of Jesus Christ. To adore, there in the silence, in the silence of adoration. He is the Lord, and I adore Him.” -Pope Francis, in the article linked.

Silence. Mentioned twice.

Sounds like a typical Pope Francis-ism. I suppose he was thinking of it more in terms of spending time on Jesus that you could be spending on something else. Since English doesn’t seem to be his preferred language I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

So…how do you expect the Lord to speak to you in/from the Blessed Sacrament if you’re already pre-loading music? I can listen to music anytime…but in Adoration, I’m there for my dedicated time to hear the still, small voice.

I can understand why you want to use music during your adoration. Music, songs, visual aids, do enhance and facilitate our physical and mental perception/facutlies. In your case, perhaps to bring you into that atmosphere of worship - where music provides the ambiance and atmosphere needed.

As humans, we sometimes find that we just cannot turn ourselves on and off but may need something to help us turning on. Those things can help.

Perhaps, as you getting more and more into adoration you may find that you will no more need of any external aids; and you may find the adoration just as edifying just the same. That it is between you and Jesus alone. That he is a music to your ears and your soul. That any other things are just noises that distract your hearing of him.

God bless.

For me, personally, it takes a bit for me to ‘shut off’ my brain. There may be silence in the physical surroundings, but not in my brain! I have ADHD and I have to ‘prep’ for silence - especially when I’m stress. Once I’ve been able to calm my brain with some very lovely chant, I can turn off the music and just ‘be’ with Jesus.

My parish has a Carmelite (CMI) priest and they do adoration in complete silence (no hourly/cardinal hour reflections or prayers). I really do envy people that can go from a loud and noisy world and just turn off the noise in their brains like they would turn off a water faucet.
