hi guys. i just bought the Queen platinum collection. im not going to stop listening to it, i wanna make that clear. what little i know about it, is that its not a mortal sin, but also not recommended. i mean…just listen to some of their songs. (besides: we will rock you and such. they are good songs, but i think that if someone judged Queen on that song, they would be misrepresented.) did you know that they made the song that goes: “oooh…you make me live”. thats a good song. so, without bias, i want to know what you, and only you, think about Queen.

thanks.

Never liked 'em much, but I never bother to change the station when they’re on the radio.

I like them…and I think the name of the song you mean is “My Best Friend”???

There’s nothing wrong with Queen. It’s great music. Freddy Mercury died way too young! We will rock you means that they will get you into the rock and roll, excited about the music. Nothing nasty.

I enjoy some Queen songs. I saw them when they toured about 2 years ago. It was fun.

** funny story tangent

I had a Queen cassette (don’t recall what one anymore) that had Bohemian Rhapsody on it. Then Wayne’s World comes out and I find my little sis walking around singing that song all the time. She said once that she thought about buying it. I told her that I already had it and she was amazed! How could her geeky older brother have something so cool?

Well then thanks to the radio they overplayed the snot out of that song and I don’t like it so much anymore

yah. hey on one of the songs, it went like this, “you say white, i say black” “you say lord i say christ”

am i just seeing what i want to see? its just that well, freddy mercury was supposedly gay…and he was a rockstar… i dunno i just cant stop thinking about where he went when he died:shrug:

I believe that line uses “christ” in a swearing way combined with the next line, so don’t get too happy about it.

I like their music, but never bought the albums so have really only heard the “greatest hits” that got airplay.

I love the complexity of the music (e.g. Bohemian Rhapsody), the signature guitar sound, the clarity of the vocals. I have heard that when they formed the band, they all had masters degrees in music.

Freddie Mercury did die of AIDS. There have been benefit concerts of rock stars playing the music of Queen to raise money for AIDS. Search for “bowie lenox” on YouTube and you’ll find several clips of them doing a sizzling duet of Under Pressure.

I find Bohemian Rhapsody eerily prophetic, considering how Freddie Mercury died: "just killed a man…put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger now he’s dead [think Freudian imagery there]… Too late,my time has come, Sends shivers down my spine, Body’s aching all the time,… "

On American Idol I once heard a judge criticize a contestant for choosing a Queen song because, “you can’t do it justice …NOBODY has a voice like Freddie Mercury.”

Anyway, just a bunch of random thoughts. Yeah, I like the music of Queen too.

I always loved his voice! Yeah, I think it would be very difficult to cover a song made famous by Freddie Mercury. I thought Suzie(?) didn’t do a bad job though.

We did a choir version of Bohermian Rhapsody when I was in High school! It was so much fun and highlighted the complexity of the music.

I heard that Brian May got a PhD in Astro-physics recently (like in the last two or three years I think). He said he didn’t want an honorary doctorate but the real thing and he finally got it. I thought that was impressive and shows that Queen wasn’t just a bunch of models singing songs.

There are some songs I won’t listen to (Fat bottomed girls  ). I just don’t want my daughters getting that imagery. My 8 year old, who is a little pixie, is already asking me if she’s “fat” 😦 .

Now i do not disagree that you may not want your daughter to hear that song because it is a bit sexual in nature, HOWEVER, that is a song that is actually praises girls with big bottoms. beauty is in the ye of the beholder if you will.

Queen has a lot of great songs, we used “your my best friend” for our slide show. I have been a Queen fan since i was about 12 (had older brothers who got me into the classic rock early), and even if Freddie Mercury was gay (he almost certainly was) it does not take away from the music of Queen.

👍 Nothing wrong with liking Queen. Between Freddie’s bravura vocals and the phrasing in Brian May’s guitar work, they were one of the best bands to come out of the 1970’s and probably the best touring band of that era. Yeah, sure some of the work is suggestive, but that’s Rock ‘n’ Roll for ya. But their better work isn’t; it’s compelling and powerful. Take a listen to ‘The Prophet’s Song’ from ‘Night at the Opera’, or ‘Father to Son’ or ‘White Queen’ from Queen II(which is my favorite CD). They even recorded a song called ‘Jesus’ on their self-title debut album.

If you came away with the impression that I’m a big fan, you’d be right. I borrowed their first album from my sister in 1974 and have been a fan ever since. 'Nuff said.

I think of one of Queen’s songs every time I hear that an attractive young lady has either gotten engaged or married. That song, of course is, “Another One Bites The Dust”

ahhh yes, something off their obligatory disco album.

Dr. May successfully defended his dissertation earlier this year, to complete the work he had begun in the early 70s before quitting grad school for Queen. Freddie earned a degree in graphic design, Roger Taylor (drums) has a 1st Class honors B.Sc. in biology and began a graduate degree before Queen took off, and John Deacon (bass) has a M.Sc. in electrical engineering. Those are some highly intelligent rockers. 👍

I can’t decide whether “Innuendo” or “A Day at the Races” is my favorite Queen album. “Innuendo” was the last one released before Freddie died and knowing how ill he was when he recorded that material, I always marvel at the strength of his voice. The band released one more album with Freddie after his death, “Made In Heaven” (1995), using vocals that he recorded in his last few months. According to an article I read, he wanted to give the band as much material to use as possible while he still had the strength to sing. IMO it’s not their strongest album overall, but Freddie’s voice is magnificent. It’s as though his voice got stronger and better as his body wasted away. Definitely worth a listen or several.

What a fine group they were! Freddie’s death was a true loss to popular music.

I love Queen! Freddie Mercury was one of the vocalists I idolized, for the sheer quality of his voice. My favorite song is “Somebody to Love” - Anne Hathaway did a cute little version in the movie “Ella Enchanted.”

Queen is cool. I don’t have a moral problem with myself for listening to old Queen albums, although I hardly listen to any music anymore. When I do, I am amazed at the complexities of their scores - they blow away most anything else I’ve heard over the past twenty years.

I would have liked to have been able to witness to the guys in the band. “Hey, your music is great - your lifestyle isn’t very good.” Love the sinner, but hate the sin…

LOVE LOVE LOVE Queen! Ever since my brother and I were addicted to the movie Flash Gordon… I loved their music without knowing who they were. My DH formally introduced me to their music when we started dating, and I have loved it ever since.

I loved Made in Heaven, but it didn’t have the joy and exuberance of much of their earlier work. Understandably. It was what it was meant to be when they released it. A sad and fond farewell to a man who died too soon. You could feel how much they missed Freddie in those tracks, the longing, the hole he left in their lives.

Most of Queen, though, is just fun, well-made music. The poignancy of Who Wants to Live Forever still moves me, and I have heard it a hundred times.

As for the moral side… well, we both like Metallica too, and enjoy a lot of metal. I guess we separate the two. We can enjoy the music without agreeing with all the lyrics. And at times, we have heard ideas there that challenge us to consider and form our own more thoroughly.

First off: Freddy Mercury was the best vocalist to ever walk the planet. He could sing any genera of music and do it well. He could do things with his vocals that I have never heard before or never since.

Second: Brian May and the boys were beyond accomplished musicians. They played and played well. They played well as a unit.

Third: Freddy’s sexuality. He was an openly gay man. He lived life and live it to the fullest. I know homosexuality is wrong but I still can’t throw the first stone. I have my demons as well. I sin on a daily bases.

Fourth: The hardest song to listen too is The Show Must Go On. He laid the vocal tracks while fighting the disease. They said they had to prop him up on a stool because he was so weak. To be that weak and sick and belt out that song is amazing.

Queen - The Show Must Go On Lyrics print version

Empty spaces - what are we living for
Abandoned places - I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for…
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore
The show must go on,
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on.
Whatever happens, I’ll leave it all to chance
Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I’m learning, I must be warmer now
I’ll soon be turning, round the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I’m aching to be free
The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on
My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly - my friends
The show must go on
The show must go on
I’ll face it with a grin
I’m never giving in
On - with the show -
I’ll top the bill, I’ll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
On with the -
On with the show -
The show must go on…

I for one pray for his soul.
