Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This morning, as I prayed the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary, it occurred to me that the Gospels record words spoken by Mary, and yet some people will say there is so “little” in Scripture concerning Mary. I wonder how many really listen and hear the beauty of Mary’s words as well as her actions. It is the same with words recorded by the Gospel writers of what Jesus said and did. How many take time to listen – really listen?

I was blessed by Mary’s first word in the Gospel of Luke: “How?” Mary listens to the Angel’s message from God and the first word Mary says is: “How?” What an encouraging word for all of us who want to do God’s Will, who earnestly seek to please Him, to hear our Mother ask: “How can this be since…”
Unlike Zechariah’s question of disbelief, Mary’s question stems from her desire to do what God desires. Mary only asks how she is to do what He asks of her.

Immediately I thought of Mary’s words at Cana when Mary tells the servants, concerning her Son, “Do whatever He tells you”. Mary knows that God speaks to us and gives us the graces we need to do whatever He asks. How Good God is to give us such a Mother, who teaches us by word and example how to listen, and what to say or do! How Good Jesus is to tell us: “Behold your Mother”.

Thanks so much, miz, for your reply. As wonderful a Mother as Mary is, it seems so many have fallen away from her and her Son. Let us continue to pray for one another and all those in most need of God’s Mercy.

And the joy expressed in the Magnificat:

Luke 1
46 And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him.
51 He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy:
55 As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.

Dear Vico,

Thanks for your reply and the words of Our Mother’s Canticle from Luke’s Gospel. As a member of the Legion of Mary, I pray her words in this prayer every morning in union with the millions of Active and Auxiliary members of the Legion all over the world. If you or any others reading this thread would like to know about the Legion of Mary see HERE. Founded by the Servant of God Frank Duff in 1921, it has grown to be the largest lay apostolate in the world. Amazing how God honors His Mother and through her is so beautifully glorified in all who love Him through her.
