Could anyone contribute examples of waky Liturgical Jargon, Psychobabble and Mumbojumbo used by “liberals” (vocabulary or grammar).
(Yes, I’m compiling a list. 🙂 )

E.G.: Vocabulary: empower, self actualise, paradigm shift
Grammar: non-use of the articles ‘the’ or ‘a’

Thanks. 🙂

Hmmmm.
My parish seems to have begun becoming more “liberal” in just the past few years.
Not sure if this is what you mean, but we always used to refer to ourselves as a “parish,” or a “parish family.” It just seemed natural. And everyone knows, almost without thinking, that in a family, there is a Father and a Mother…
But all of a sudden those terms were traded in.
Now, we’re generally referred to as a “community.”
Along with that change in term, the relationships have changed as well, as one might imagine.
It may seem subtle or insignificant to some, but to me it seems as obvious as the difference between being a kid in a two-parent home to being a kid of a single parent living in a project.
Something seems to be missing…
Pax Christi. <><

“Faith Community.” “Celebrate the ‘Meal’.” I’m sure more will come to mind.

Last week, I was at my husband’s parish, and the priest announced from the ambo:

“For those of you in the handicapped pews, the Eucharistic ministers will bring the bread and wine to you.” Does this sound like a priest who believes in the Real Presence? And what’s with the Eucharistic minister crud?

“for vocations to the lay ministries…let us pray to the Lord”
“The presider of today’s liturgy will be…”
“journey of faith”
share our stories
“a collaborative church”
did you already have “diversity”
Safe environment
lay leadership
build up community

The “Jesus event”
empower
inclusive language
social justice
altar servers
(Fill in the blank) Minister or Ministry
or
Ministers or Ministry of (Fill in the blank)

This one’s more protestant, but

“Lets get together and fellowship!”

Presider
Assembly
Gathering
Sending
Liturgy (instead of Mass)

music ministry
ministry of movement

pastoral associate (not associate pastor)

My dh got in big trouble with our priest because he referred to the vestibule as the vestibule. Fr. said it’s the “gathering place”. In protest, I now call it the lobby.

Oh the lobby is that spot outside of the “worship space”😉

In a brand new church in a neighboring town, they have a gathering space. That is fine, but before mass, people are so noisy out there that you couldn’t pray or meditate if you wanted to. It’s fine to come to mass and say "good morning"or something, but it sounds like they are discussing the whole weeks happenings. Things have really changed since I was a kid. We would be elbowed by my mom for just whispering.

Gathering song

Sending forth song

Also, in response to “the body od Christ”, “yes we are.”

There are some who would put terms like “epiclesis” and “anamnesis” and “transsubstantiation” on such a list.

Not saying I’m one of them… but beware of labeling as “waky Liturgical Jargon” terms that you either don’t like or don’t understand.

I think my personal peeves are “We are church” and “Liturgical musician” (what used to be called an “organist”).

That sounds an awful lot like denying the Real Presence! People really do that???

A parish near me refers to itself as a “Covenant Community in Christ.” The New Oxford Review had an interesting article recently about parishes that call themselves communities instead of parishes or churches.

Another of my pet peeves is the irritating expression"time, talent, and treasure." My response is, “tired, trite and tripe”. If you need folks to donate their time, skills, abilities and monetary resources to the parish, then just say so!

I guess they think they’re being clever with their alliterations. I think it just dumbs down dogma, personally!

I’m scared to say it, but I see absolutely nothing wrong with ‘journey of faith’ and ‘social justice’. Those defintiely both seem legit to me.
