Hello everyone — we’ve got some folks coming into the Church on Pentecost Sunday (sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation will be celebrated) — I can’t find any documentation that either supports or prohibits the singing of the Litany of the Saints on Pentecost in this instance, as we would do on the Easter Vigil — anybody have any guidelines available ? Many thanks in advance !

I doubt there are any specific rubrics for Pentecost because it is assumed that they would have entered at Easter.

During a baptism the Litany of the Saints would be sung or said so my guess is that it would be during Pentecost. Some of the prayers and blessings could be different. The priest or deacon would now.

From the General Introduction the Rite of Baptism for Children it describes
in n. 29 what happens if baptism takes place during Sunday Mass. In 29-2 (d) it has:

“The general intercessions are taken from those used in the rite of baptism (nos. 47-48). At the end, however, before the invocation of the saints, petitions are added for the universal Church and the needs of the world.”

(From The Rites, Volume One, Liturgical Press, 1990, isbn 0814660150, page 374).

The Ceremonial of Bishops does not mention the litany of saints in the description of “Celebration of baptism within Mass” in the section “Baptism of Children”. It has:

“439 The bishop introduces the general intercessions. When these are over, the bishop remains standing at the chair as a presbyter says the prayer of exorcism and carries out the prebaptismal anointing.”

The litany of saints in the Rite of Baptism for Children only names five saints. It then has: “The names of other saints may be added …”. (n. 48).

Thanks JL — I did find those rubrics for the RBC, but my apologies, I neglected to mention that these were all teens and adults who were being welcomed into the Church. I looked through the RCIA rubrics, but the only mention of the LOS is during the Easter Vigil, naturally — well, at least I have another year to research the topic, LOL ! Thanks very much again —

We had a Baptism at Pentecost and the Litany was sung, as it is at every Baptism even if I have to sing it myself - I should add that I’m not the congregation’s favorite choice, if you get my drift. 😃

Why did the pastor not bring them in at Easter?

I ask because you said you had a year to research it, implying it is likely to happen again next year. Teens and adults should be baptized at the Easter vigil.

There could have been delays if there was a marriage that needed to be looked into and it wasn’t cleared before Easter. Instead of letting them wait for another year, they would be baptised or make a profession of faith at a suitable time.
