Hi,

So I’m the new music director at a Catholic Parish in Minnesota. I didn’t go to school for Liturgy, but I definitely know my way around… or so I thought.

We’re doing the Litany of Saints on All Saints Day as a sung chant but accompanied. However, I’m not sure what to do when we get to the part where it says “make this font holy by your grace for the new birth of your children…”

I don’t remember singing this part outside of Holy Saturday. How am I supposed to end the Litany when used outside of the Holy Saturday liturgy?

I’m frustrated because I’m really not getting anywhere in answering this question. Please help!!

God bless,

Teresa

Since there is no font on All Saints’ Day, any reference to it is skipped.

Since you seem to be familiar with the Litany in general, it might help to cite at what point you’re experiencing the difficulty.

Hi Porthos11,

So from what I understand, we finish with the invocations “Lord have mercy, etc.”

Then we invoke the saints beginning with Holy Mary, Mother of God.
Then we sing “Be merciful to us sinners” followed by “Lord we ask you hear our prayer”

Then in my copy it says the part “make this font holy by your grace for the new birth of your children… Lord we ask you hear our prayer”

Immediately after this, we get, "Jesus Son of the Living God, “Lord we ask you hear our prayer”
and then the Christ hear us, Christ Graciously hear us.

Am I correct in assuming I can just skip the line about the font and go on to finish the Litany?

Thanks for the quick reply!👍

That would be correct. The font is specific to the Easter Vigil and the customary Litany of Saints does not have it for general use.

Thanks a lot, that’s what I was thinking.

God bless!

Thanks 🙂 I am going to use the Tony Alonso WLP version. I think it’s closer to chant while being accessible.

They’re all pretty much chanted.
I don’t know of any in song format.

First of all, you should have called your uncle. 🙂

Second, like you’ve read from others, skip the baptism parts.

Third, add some saints. Really, I’m about to get yelled at for it, but add some. Your parish has a patron(ess), diocese, etc. I usually added a bunch. New saints? sure! Old saints, you bet!

Fourth, The Becker is a nice alternative, but use the updated version. OCP made some valuable changes.

Fifth, it’s a prayer, so you sing it by praying! It’s a good practice to ask those around the Throne to intercede for us so do it with confidence!
