I noticed that a new version of the Litany of Saints is being introduced. Where the saints are mentioned only by their first names without the honor of being called a Saint.

For example:

Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy x3

Mary and Joseph…pray for us
Peter and Paul… pray for us
Micheal and Gabriel… pray for us

and so on and so forth

This bothers me since the Litany is such a devout practice
and taking the “Saint” out of the Litany of the Saints is kind of
well unfair to those pious souls.

Oh and taking out all the references of Mary as the Mother of God
is kind of displeasing. 😦

But the number one problem with the new version was this…

Martin Luther King Jr…pray for us
Susan B Anthony…pray for us

…WHAT!?

Im not saying I dont support what those two people stood for in life, but
  1. THEY ARE NOT SAINTS
  2. ONE IS A BAPTIST PREACHER WITH THE NAMESAKE OF WELL…LETS JUST SAY NOT THE MOST CATHOLIC PERSON AROUND.
…mad

Yes, my parish had such a thing at Easter Vigil this year (without the ‘Martin Luther King Jr.’ and ‘Susan B. Anthony’ parts). No "Saint’, no referances to Mary as the Mother of God. 😦

Interesting … who wrote this new Litany and have they said anything about why they’re including Susan B Anthony (was she even Catholic?) and Martin Luther King Jr?

I mean why not Abraham Lincoln (after all, he emancipated the slaves) or the good womenfolk of New Zealand who actually won universal female suffrage in 1894, being the first nation in the world to do so?

Our parish did this too - it’s horrid. Don’t know if this is the one your parish used, but the one below is used in ours. I wish I could give you the melody - it is about the worst thing I’ve heard in my life. I would almost rather sing “Gather Us In” - no kidding.

It’s by David Kauffman and goes:
Refrain:
*Saints of God, pray, rejoice, and sing with us as we invoke your names. *

Then the cantor rattles off Saint names (without the words ‘Saint’) and we repeat the Refrain.

Verse Responses: *O Lord, save your people, O Lord hear our prayer. *

Pax vobiscum!

I haven’t heard this yet. At my cousin’s wedding last summer, they did the Litany of the Saints during the Presentation to Our Lady and St. Joseph. It was beautiful. “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us. St. Michael, pray for us. Holy angels of God, pray for us…” Also, the Litany of Saints from JPII’s funeral. Now THAT’S the Litany of the Saints! I love this song/prayer.

In Christ,
Rand

It’s my understanding that the official Litany of the Saints, along with the Litanies of the Holy Name, Sacred Heart, Precious Blood, Loreto, and St. Joseph are the only Litanies approved for public use.
