I have heard that it is a traditional practice to pray the Litany of the Saints after the 7 penitential Psalms. I have picked up this habit and try to practice it on penitential days. What I was wondering is if there there is a Psalm that comes after the Litany of the Saints. I have an old prayer book from the 30’s, which indicates a Psalm after the Litany, but I would like to know if this is normal praxis.

If you mean Psalm 69, then yes, it is prayed after the seven penitential psalms and the Litany of the Saints.

It is a very important psalm, and the first two verses “O God come to my assistance, O Lord make haste to help me” are the oft-repeated prayer of the early Fathers of the Desert. It was later incorporated into the opening versicles of every Hour of the Western Offices.

Many thanks! So, let me see if I got this correctly:

  1. *]7 Penitential Psalms
    *]Litany of the Saints
    *]Psalm 69

Hopefully I can get more people to pray this with me on Fridays.
