Hello all! Can anyone help me to understand the last part of this litany? It’s called “Litany of the Seven Sorrows”. After the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world…” part of the litany, it ends:

“Look down upon us, deliver us, and save us from all trouble, in the power of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Let Us Pray.
Imprint, O Lady, thy wounds upon my heart, that I may read therein sorrow and love sorrow to endure every sorrow for thee, love to despise every love for thee. Amen.”

What does ‘love to despise every love for thee’ mean? The rest of the prayer seems to me like a nice Marian devotion. Can someone share some insight with me please?

‘To despise every love for thee’ doesn’t mean how it sounds. ‘For thee’ means ‘for thy sake’.

I don’t think it’s a good prayer, personally.

I get it! Every love, FOR thee, as in “in thy honor”, or “except for thee”, not “all love I would give towards thee”. Thank you so much!
