I arrived home the other day to find a couple of JW magazines with a letter from a lady in our extended neighborhood in our door. The letter included an invitation to discuss ‘religion’ and her address was listed at the bottom of the page.

I like to consider myself somewhat of a novice apologist, and I’m always up for learning more about how to properly practice Catholic Apologetics.

My questions for you all are:
  1. Should I even worry about sending anything back to her?
  2. If so, what should be my first move?
Thanks for any replies in advance.

Do you know this person? Did she target you in particular or was this a blitz of your area? If it were me, I’d ignore it, but if you want to answer her you could just send her a couple of articles about JW’s as the Church sees them you can easily find with a simple search of this website. 🙂

Don’t know her, but she must have hand-written alot of letters!

I’ll likely ignore it, but I’m always looking for opportunities to share our faith, and I wanted to see what all of you would suggest.

Thanks!

She very well may have, thinking it would be more effective. But she may have only used a cursive font to make it look like she personally wrote all the notes. Just a thought.

Yes, it can be hard to know when your efforts will be worth the trouble and when you would only be casting pearls before swine. It’s a call only you can make, when all is said and done.

Meet with her if you dare, but whatever you do, do not be on her turf. Plus, she will not be alone. She will bring along a sidekick. It would be wise of you not to be outnumbered.

They will eventually try to get you to go to their Kingdom Hall. Whatever you do, don’t go to their church. These people are clever. (This is very important. You will not leave that place until they let you go).

Also, don’t let them get the upper hand of the conversation. Stick with the fact that they don’t believe Jesus is God. There is no defense of this belief based on the Bible. They will eventually give you up, but not before you have had a chance to proclaim the Gospel.

Your neighbor may have detected a potential JW in you if she knows you. This is why she dares to do this. Do plenty of research beforehand, and pray for protection and guidance from the Holy Spirit. Go get 'em.

To play the pessamist:

If a Chevy dealer leaves advertising literature on your door, it is probably not worth the effort to meet with him to discuss a Ford.

If you do meet with them there will be two. One will do all the talking. He is the experienced one; the other is a learner. Pitch your response to the silent one. You may get something through to him. Though you will probably get no response so never know if you succeeded…

I agree.

I usually give information aimed at the learner. I tell them that I was convinced of the Truth of Catholicism by the writings of the Apostolic and Early Church Fathers, and that what the Church taught in the 1st century, which they received from the Apostles themselves, is the same as what the Church teaches today.

Then I remark how much easier it is to find the writings of the ECF today, they just have to type it in Google and they can read it all online.

As an ex-JW, I have to warn you that meeting with her will place you on spiritually very dangerous turf.

Instead, send her some Catholic literature in the mail, maybe a copy of PILLAR OF FIRE, PILLAR OF TRUTH and a few Catholic Answers Tracts on particular Catholic doctrines. And don’t forget to pray for her soul.

God bless,

Best advice so far. 👍

I think I would ignore it, and if she comes over again tell her not to waster her materials on you because you’re very happily Catholic and intend to remain Catholic. Then politely but firmly close the door. Deb
