I have some questions dealing with literature:
  1. I am planning to write a fantasy novel. It concerns fairies, magic, wizards and witches, people with super elemental powers. Is it okay to write it?
  2. Is reading/liking slash fiction ever okay?
  3. In my story, (or the one i am planning to write) i made a pair of siblings. The elder brother based on my friend. And then i used to like to think that they are together. But i think that’s kind of dysfunctional. But i still think they make a good couple and so i am planning to not to make them related. His brother was adopted. So is that okay?

The Church has never issued “rules” regarding fictional literature. Obviously, anything that encouraged or justified morally offensive acts (killing innocent people, etc) or glorified demonic beings would be clearly contrary to the Church’s moral teaching - so don’t do that.

Slash fiction appeals to the prurient side of our nature, and often leads to lustful thoughts and desires, masturbation, or worse (and usually adds the additional problem of homosexuality). I see no value to regularly stimulating this flawed aspect of our nature. or of the promotion of homosexual conduct, but I don’t think that the reading/writing of such material itself could constitute a sin (provided you could somehow supress these other consequences). A steady diet of such material will wear down our moral defenses.

But it’s fine to write about magic and dragons and unicorns and starships and time travel and all sorts of other things that aren’t real. It is, after all, fiction.

Cheers!

C.S. Lewis, who wrote the Chronicles of Narnia series, was a fantasy author respected by both Protestants and Catholics, as was his fried J.R.R. Tolkien, who wrote the Lord of the Rings trilogy. They both wrote about good beings struggling against evil creatures, and used much Christian symbolism.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with writing fantasy stories. Feel free to put in as many unicorns, elves, fairies, etc… as you want. The slash fiction, however, is problematic. Having been exposed to such stories, I believe it subtly portrays a homosexual lifestyle as acceptable, even when they are not explicit. I still would recommend that you make the boys really good friends. As a writer, I think it would be more challenging and more rewarding to write a story in which two guys have a deep relationship that is strictly platonic. Happy writing! 🙂
