This is a really good movie. The movie does not like any movies made by catholics to begin with. On a rare occasion you get a catholic movie. Even though he did a great job with Bella(abortion), the subject matter was wrong for Hollywood.
Because this picks up the name of the atomic bomb, I am sure Hollywood does not like it and they already hate him for Bella.
The critics have trashed the movie.

I saw it last week Saturday and enjoyed it. I think its a good film and has messages that apply to all christians,not just us Catholics.

This seems like the kind of film that would have been around in the thirties, forties and fifties. It leaves you feeling good.
I think that is why we became such a great nation. Hollywood at the time was more positive.
Today this movie can’t even get theater acceptance so it is available only in limited places.

I don’t know about the movie industry, but it might make another 5 million or more in DVD rental or sales and I am sure in the history of movie making there have been far greater losses.

It cost 20 million to make and it has only made 5 even with 5 million in DVD, that won’t do it. This is an upcoming spanish-american catholic movie director. He cannot afford this type of loss.

He took a risk. He took a gamble. There is never a guarantee that a movie will succeed. It happens everyday. Maybe his next film will make triple what it cost to make.

When the movie Sniper came out most of the conservative radio station hosts had no problem talking it up so much so that it made 500 million but there is no promotion of this film by these major personalities.
I just hate to see a good director be squashed by Hollywood. He may never make another movie and to me that would be a shame.

I have seen these two abortion films “Bella”(Metanoia) and “Juno”. I thought Bella was by far a better film.

I have never heard of Bella until this thread. And I have not heard of the film company either. Hollywood is very liberal. Look what happened to Jim Caviezal (sp?) and his career after he made The Passion movie. He struggled for several years and couldn’t get work.
A lot of it has to do with politics. I don’t know how they got to promote Sniper as much as they did. If you can get Rush or Hannity or Beck or a major conservative radio host or tv personality to speak about the film it helps a lot. It sounds like this is a good film company so hope they will perservere.

I am always disappointed with religious and biblical movies. The dialogue is usually stilted, most roles are over acted, and they are almost always obvious and heavy-handed.
We saw Little Boy last week and liked it a lot. I thought the acting was good and it didn’t smack you in the face with the plot.
I really don’t understand what people would find objectionable about the depiction of Hiroshima. I thought it was understated but still compelling.

The Hollywood left hates the atomic bomb and think it should never have been dropped, that it was America’s fault that this happened.
If Americans has just been kinder, the war would have ended anyway. This is how many view World War II.
I am more disappointed in our own conservative media because they know this and still there has been very little said about this movie.

The Second World War was a series of unremitting horrors and inhumanity. Some of this atrocity was justified (Hiroshima) some of them not (Rumbala). No matter how justified or unjustified the atrocity in question, it is perhaps dubious taste to use it as the denouement of a paper-thin faith-based film. If a film is sufficiently lightweight throughout much of its running time, then it’s a bad idea to begin tackling weighty events and issues at the end.
It would be like making a cheesy romantic comedy, and having one of the parties end up in Chelmno.

That’s the impression I’ve gotten as well. The message which reviewers seem to have gotten was that God answered the little boy’s prayers by letting the atom bomb get dropped on Japan so the kid’s father could come home.
I haven’t seen the movie, but given that impression, I can certainly understand why so many critics despised it. That would seem like a pretty disturbing and depressing message for what is supposed to be an uplifting film.
I think the filmmakers would have done much better if they focused on the story of the kid who is trying to live out his faith, and not drag in the controversy about whether it was right to drop the bomb and kill so many Japanese civilians.

Jim Caviezel is on a drama on CBS. He actually made lots of money from the Passion, and can afford to be pretty choosy if he wants to be.

Yes I know he has a show now, but I heard him say in an interview how hard it was to find work after he made The Passion.
Even though he made lots of money from the movie, he had a hard time finding work after that. He did an audio version of the Bible that he promoted around the country. I saw him 9 years ago at a church in Phoenix promoting this audio Bible. It had a good cast. I don’t remember what year The Passion was made, but it is only in the last few years he has been getting steady work again. So it was a long dry spell.

I agree that maybe he should have really thought this over or maybe he didn’t realize that in bringing this into the movie he was touching the left that feels if we had just not dropped the bomb everything would be fine… He maybe did not realize how over sensitive many are on this matter still today. In a major war, it is often pretty difficult come up with something that is not objectionable.
He was looking for something that was cataclysmic. That was his point of the story not the bomb.
