I cannot open it.

I had thought of being a hermit myself for quite sometime, the actual vocation seems to appeal to me a lot more than the others.
I had thought of going to Medugorje, to live in the mountains there, or Jerusalem, or Mount gazarim.

but I’ll try this out if only it would open.

is it American ( international ) or European?

God bless
Stephen

Just opened it and its American which counts me out. 😦

I’m Irish

oh well

God bless
Stephen

They are in France as well.
So what do you think I should do? e-mail them and tell them who I am and where I am and then there is a good possibilty they will direct me that way then?

have they a website for france? anyhow thanks for letting me know, if it be Gods will I’ll find out.

God bless
Stephen ❤️

You can probably write to the American hermitage and they will provide contact info for the French hermitage. My small “word of life” to you is to be as generous as the Holy Spirit inspires.

I almost went on a retreat at their Texas house. I had no idea at the time who they were. It seems the Holy Spirit is working strongly in them over these past few years.

A short note about them on the diocese web page.

A book I read on Charles de Foucauld (the litte brother of Jesus):

I am discerning with the Hermits of Bethlehem for two weeks starting March 14th. This is my second time visiting. Please pray for me as I will for you.

Be bold for the Lord!

The Hermits of Bethlehem…can they be found in Europe also?

or even anywhere remotely close to Europe such as Israel?

Thank you for the advice, I shall be e-mailing them today.

God bless
Stephen

P.s you shall be in my prayers

Stephen-It seems your heart is being stirred in that direction. I am guessing it is the Holy Spirit. I would suggest you pray over it, and then act, and be at peace. Dia leat.

Yes it certainly is. I could not get into the priesthood due to my lack of education. but I feel a strong urge for seclusion. complete seclusion that is. I’ve been to the cistercians but didnt find it there. and the thing that has me a little worried when it comes to the little brothers of the Eucharist is that its gonna be a little of the same. I am looking to be completly alone Now I am not sure if the title that suits that phrase is an anchorite, but I’m sure an Anchorite is different to a hermit right? I saw a documentry on tele a year ago, of one of the worlds last anchorites called Lazarus, he was Orthodox and lived ( to my memory ) on mount gazarim the exact same mountain and St.Athony stayed on, He has two places on the mountain, one for himself and one for guests, although his guests are rare. I’d like to go there and join him but I’m wondering if it is ok for a Catholic to receive communion In Orthodox church? I dunno

God bless you
Stephen

Fr. Lazarus will tell you that to first be a solitary, one must be trained by years of experience in the cenobium or community.

Otherwise, you open yourself up to spiritual delusion, mental crack up, or both.

I don’t quite agree with this statement. While it may be beneficial for some people to join a community before becoming a hermit, it is not required. Look at St. William the Hermit or St. Paul of Thebes. Both are recognized as saints and they lived alone, as hermits, for most of their lives.

There are two kinds of eremitical lifestyles that do not require community training. One is a diocesan hermit under Canon 603, and the other is non-consecrated hermit. Both usually live alone, but Canon 603 hermits can live in lauras with other hermits. But in the old times, hermits used to live in caves or constructed dwellings in forests or deserts.

Hermits nowadays do not live their life in total solitude. They try to have silence as much as possible, but they still converse with friends and family. They are also self-sufficient (and are required to be if living under Canon 603) and have jobs like normal people.

To end this statement, I believe that if someone has a true vocation to the eremitical lifestyle from God, God will give them the grace to live this life whether or not they’ve been in formation with a regular religious community.

The term “anchorite” is often used as a synonym for hermit, not only in the earliest written sources but throughout the centuries. Yet the anchoritic life, while similar to the eremitic life, can also be distinct from it. In the Middle Ages anchorite was a common vocation. Anchorites and anchoresses lived the religious life in the solitude of an “anchorhold” (or “anchorage”), usually a small hut or “cell” built against a church. The door of anchorages tended to be bricked up in a special ceremony conducted by the local bishop after the anchorite had moved in. Medieval churches survive that have a tiny window (“squint”) built into the shared wall near the sanctuary to allow the anchorite to participate in the liturgy by listening to the service and to receive Holy communion. Another window led out into the street, enabling charitable neighbors to deliver food and other necessities. In our times the anchoritic life as a distinct form of vocation is almost unheard of.
Anchorites are not different from hermits. Here is more on the subject:

although the above statement is not entirely true, it does however make a lot of sense. St.Anthony didnt have any training but we do read from the expereinces he had that he was found in his cave one day totally wacked out of it so to speak and just lying on the ground, wide eyed in his cave.

So Yes I’d much rather probably at least getting into the community first and then working it from there maybe.
well may the will of God be done, I’ve just got an e-mail back from Bro.Michael in St.Probace France as this hermitage is much closer to me and available, rather than the travelling and visa difficulties I would have for the U.s.a

I praise God for the help he has given me by means of you all.
you’ve certainly got a lot more faith than I do.

God bless you
Stephen ❤️

God be praised! Wondeful news, Stephen!

May your heart be open to whatever He has planned for you.

Yes I am hoping to go on that 9 month vocation they have, that would be amazinggggggggg. I look forward to it I really do.
I asked our Lord tonight what it was he was calling me to, either marriage or religious life? I told him I was confused a little as I dont know what it is he wants of me ( long story ).

but I opened the sacristans diary of St.Faustina and in it was a prayer card by St.Jude hahaha the saint of hopeless cases hmmm. then when I came home from church, I heard St.John the Baptist on the T.v as I came down the stairs shouting ‘‘REPENTTT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS CLOSE AT HAND’’

and it was he in the wilderness and they were talking about how St.John was a hermit hahaha, what do you think? you think God was speaking to me? because straight after in my prayer group I opened my bible and it landed on the passage of when St.John the Baptist was beheaded.

hmmmm.

If you asked for a sign and got this, I would definitely pursue it. 👍 Sounds like the hermit lifestyle is where you are headed, my friend! :clapping: :yup: [SIGN]May God bless you![/SIGN]
