Hi!

I went to Mass today before school, and when I came out I ran into this awesome lady who was seated beside me. We introduced ourselves, and she almost immediately began showering me with blessed items and gifts and booklets (they were the bulk of what was in my backpack). Well, she gave me a brown scapular, which I’ve actually been wanting for some time now! I was reading about it in the pamphlet, and it speaks of reciting “The Little Office of Our Blessed Mother.” I searched this and wasn’t sure I understood it … What exactly is this devotion?

It’s based on the Divine Office, except is much shorter, more repetitive, and has a Marian theme.

The traditional version is great.

The new version (Im not even sure how official it is…the bishops dont seem to care much about private devotion anymore) is okay, I guess.

But I’d highly recommend that old rite version, found in the back of breviaries and at one time even official pseudo-liturgy required of the clergy.

However, most people ask the priest investing them in the brown scapular to replace that requirement with saying 5-decades of the Rosary daily, as is allowed.

It is also not a condition of the “if you die wearing this scapular…” promise, but only of the Sabbatine Priveledge, whose authenticity is less certain, though I believe it.
