Does anyone know if the little office of the Blessed Virgin Mary is actually enriched with indulgences? Although I’m told it is by the books I’ve read, I can’t find any reference to it on the enchirdon indulgentiam, all the other little offices have one as far as I can see but not that one, maybe I’m mistaken though 😊

I actually did a Yahoo search, “Indulgences attached to the little office of the Blessed Virgin Mary” and got a few hits. You might want to try that. I have the older version from 1904 and there are indeed indulgences attached to reciting it.

I pray the same Little Office of the BVM as CatholcFireman, and he is correct.

Hmm it appears that some versions of the enchirdon say it has got indulgences, but most don’t mention it.

I have a Baronius Press version printed in 2008 by the FSSP which cites the 1917 Catholic Encyclopedia with
Pope Leo XIII granted (17 Nov., 1887), to those who recite the whole Office of Our Lady, an indulgence daily of seven years and seven quarantines, and a plenary indulgence once a month; to those who recite Matins and Lauds only, a daily indulgence of three hundred days; and (8 Dec., 1897) to those who recite Vespers and Compline only, and for each Hour, an indulgence of fifty days.
It also cites John XXIII from 1968 Enchiridion Indulgeniarum which states
36.Little Offices. The following Little Offices are each enriched with a partial indulgence: the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph.

To this was added into the 4th edition in 1999 the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
I could only find the 4th edition in Latin
3°40 parvum officium legitime adprobatum pie recitaverit (e.g. Passionis D.N.I.C., Sacr.mi Cordis Iesu, B. Mariae V., Immaculatae Conceptionis, S. Ioseph).

To my way of thinking a plenary indulgence for reading scripture for half an hour is great value. I still pray my Little Office but if I want an indulgence I read the scripture.

This shows the great (name removed by moderator)ortance that the church puts on the scripture.

To be fair I’d recite it whether there’s indulgences or not I was just curious. I’ve got an edition from 1901 as well as the baronius press edition which I use depending on which book is closer lol.

The enchiridon would have revoked earlier indulgences so it doesn’t matter what version you recite I believe but I’m no expert.

I do that too even tho’ I’ve not been positive it had indulgences attached, as I haven’t been sure from what I’ve read (tho’ I believe it is).

Any indulgences attached to the 1904 Little Office will be obsolete. For two reasons. They will not be in line with the indulgences revision of the 60s. And the 1904 Little Office is its self out of date. However there is a partial indulgence attached to the recitation og the Little Office said according to the norms of 1962.

I don’t understand, what are the norms of 1962 as pertains to the recitation?

I believe he means that the indulgence which was formerly attached to reciting it was removed, as were many indulgences.

The Little Office hasn’t really changed over all. It’s always been pretty much the same. The major change in the Roman Use of the Little Office is the introduction of the Pian Psalter, but we’re free to use either the Pian or the Gallican Psalter.

The most obvious differences are in the Antiphons. The Antiphon for Prime in Office 1 is “Assúmpta est María in cœum, gaudent Angeli, laudántes benedícunt Dóminum.” It used to be that the first Antiphon before a Psalm or canticle was incomplete. So you’d have said “Assúmpta est.” then recited the Psalm (or Psalms, for the minor Hours) and then said the Antiphon complete (“Assúmpta est María in cœum, gaudent Angeli, laudántes benedícunt Dóminum.”).

However in the 1962 norms, the Antiphon is always said complete. There may also be minor changes in the Little Chapter, etc. Maybe even the odd Psalm is different. I’m not to sure.

The indulgence for any approved Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a partial indulgence.

Such is the current grant. (#22)

The older grants would be no longer holding (unless there was perhaps some special indulgence sought and granted for say an association for members of that association etc…which I doubt).

Thanks for solving that mystery for me 🙂
