I know there are a lot of threads on scapulars already so I decided to title this one a little differently.

Does anyone know how much of the Little Office needs to be prayed daily to fulfill the Sabatine Promise requirement. I have the Little Office and it looks like there are a lot of different times when you are supposed to be praying during the day. Would it be enough to say the Morning and Evening Prayer only or do I need to do the whole thing (Office of Readings, Morning Prayer, Midmorning Prayer, Midday Prayer, Midafternoon Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Night Prayer:eek: ) every day?

Wow! I might be in trouble! I only know of the morning and evening and that’s all I ever pray the Little Office… I never heard that this was like The Divine Office where there are more than just morning and evening …oh dear.

Well… the version I have has all of this plus an other Optional “Thanksgiving for Mary’s Fiat” in the back. There is only one day of the Office of Readings, though, so I thought … don’t you think that might get a little repetitive after a week or so? It is the same way with the daytime prayer only it has the same set of psalms for each daytime hour. That could really get repetitive!
That’s why I was wondering if I had to do all of that every day.

If yours lacks all of that extra, I feel a little better, because there is no way I am going to pray all of that every day!

Repetative? Not yet, no. But I haven’t been praying it that long, nor have I been perfectly consistent. Missed days. Sometimes lots of days. But I find comfort in reciting something that I feel comfortable with. It’s a point in the prayer where I can close my eyes to say that part and just be in the presence of The Lord and His Blessed Mother. So I like the repetition. But ask me in a few more years and I might feel very different!

And another thing… I would compare it to the rosary. You pray the same mysteries day after day and year after year, yet has it ever felt old and boring and mundane? No way! You have new things in your life that you can contemplate each time you are meditating on a different mystery. It’s the same mystery you just prayed earlier in the week and yet you get something totally different out of it. That’s how I see the Little Office for now.

Can I ask where you got your copy? I got my info online as I know of nobody else that prays this so I couldn’t go to anyone to ask. I found it on a website about the Dominicans. I have never seen anything in the religious shop I go to, so I was just curious where you got a copy of what sounds like a book.

As for the reptitivness - I’m not all that worried about that. I’ve only been praying the rosary for about a year since I just joined the Church this past Easter, but I see what you mean about a sort of meditative ‘comfort’ about the reptitivness. I see what you mean. My only problem is time. I am a junior in highschool so i really am not going to have enough time to do 7 different hours a day.🙂

I got my copy for Christmas, but I think they got it from a Catholic book store. Yup, I just asked. Maybe you could ask your local Catholic bokk store and see if they could get it for you (if they don’t already hve it on the shelf). Mine is a little blue book with gold writing on the front.

You can also buy it on Amazon. (I hope I typed the url in right)

The one in the link above is the one I have. From what I have heard, as far as the laity go, they recomend you do the morning(Lauds) , evening(Vespers), and night prayers(Compline). This is what I do. I bought mine so I could carry a version of the Divine Office in my purse. I have the one volume Christian Prayers which is what I regularly use, but it’s too wide to carry in my purse all the time.

I have the Shorter Christian Prayer which I did before I got the Little Office. It is about the same size as far as width as the Little Office. The difference between it and the regular Christian Prayer is that in Christian Prayer, there are more feast days and such. The Shorter only has a few and the Little Office doesn’t have any. I say this because the Shorter might fit better in your purse.
The only reason I started to use the Little Office is because I have a scapular and one of the requirments for the Sabatine Privilege is to pray the Little Office daily.

You’re post is helpful, though. Thank you.👍

There are other ways to obtain the Sabatine Privilage…

carmelitedcj.org/saints/scapular.asp

such as abstaining from meat Wednesdays and Saturdays, OR reciting the rosary daily, OR some other pious practice as directed by a Priest.

I abstain from meat on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, 👍

I did look at the Shorter one but the Christian Prayer book has the actually sheet music for the hymns which was what I was wanting. Many of the hymns I didn’t know.

Yes, I know there are other ways to do the Sabatine Privilige, but I really would like to pray the Little Office if at all possible. It seems like the thing that would be most pleasing to Our Lady since it is her first choice. You have to get a dispensation from a priest to sub any of the other things.

If I find I just can’t handle it because I don’t have enough time, then I will ask my priest for a dispensation. I already recite the rosary daily.

Sheet Music! That’s so cool! I’ve never seen that before.

Hi, from what website did you get the Little Office? I’m searching around the Net too, but I don’t know which version to use; some prayers are different.

normally i do the morning, evening, and night prayer, and one of the day prayers (mid-morning, mid-day, mid-afternoon) or the office of the readings
