Liturgia Horarum: 1971 and 1985 editions

I’ve got a liturgical-canonical question regarding the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours (Divine Office) in Latin (post-Vatican II form). Apologies for giving a long backgrounder.😊

The current edition of the Liturgy of the Hours in Latin is the Liturgia Horarum, editio typica altera promulgated in 1985. This should have superseded the editio typica promulgated in 1971. Among the major differences of the 1985 editio typica altera from the 1971 editio typica are

use of the Nova Vulgata for the psalter, scriptural readings and responsories in the 1985 edition;

provision of a 3-year cycle of antiphons for the Benedictus and Magnificat canticles for Sundays in the 1985 edition.

My question is this: can someone still use the 1971 editio typica and fulfil the obligation to pray the Divine Office? In other words, must a Catholic use the 1985 Liturgia Horarum, editio typica altera to celebrate the Divine Office (post-Vatican II form) in Latin?
 
Just thought I’d bump this to see if anyone has an answer. I would think you could still use the 1971 edition since that’s what the two current English editions are translated from - but that’s just a guess.

My question in searching for old threads on this topic is if there are any differences between the 1985 text and the one published in 2000, sold on paxbook.com. But after a little more searching, I see it was just reprinted in 2000 (also there’s a more expensive leather bound version printed in 2003 there) Because I found the 1985 version for a cheaper price.

If priests can use the 1961/1962 Breviary, I don’t see why laymen can’t use the 1971 Liturgy of the Hours.
 
No, you can’t (unless it’s private devotion). Revised editions of liturgical books must be used, as is implied in their decrees of promulgation in the front. Of course, there would be leeway for compelling reasons (e.g. poverty) but otherwise, there would really be no sense in revising liturgical books, and also it would lead to much confusion
 
Does anyone know of any differences between the 1985-87 edition and the ones printed in 2000? (2003 leather bound, paxbook.com) This is the same edition I am pretty sure. So using the 1985 version is the most current edition right? Just looking for confirmation, or if anyone else knows anything more about this. Thanks.
