Liturgical Abuses more common in military services?

I have noticed in my entire 8 years in the Army, the Catholic Mass services differ than those in civilian Mass.

In some cases, they play electronic guitar, and piano. Sometimes, I see them give blessing to those not receiving communion, and sometimes I see some chaplains ask the faithful raise their hands up for the candidates for the RCIA before confirmation.

They seen to resemble more like Protestant services than the more tradition Catholic Mass.

I prefer Latin hymns…Despite these I have not see any priest the change the wording during the concretion. Is there anyone else who noticed this?

I have not served in the military (bad eye). I do know of several servicemen that have said the same thing you have. Sad, but I do not think much can be done about it.

I see all the practices you describe in the average American Catholic parish, and don’t have a problem with any of them. I am much more concerned about preaching heresy from the pulpit and ad-libbing the Mass, and using invalid elements for consecration. I think we would be much better served reacting to legitimate liturgical abuse, wherever it occurs, than by overreacting to minor variations in non-essentials which do not accord with our personal experience and preferences.

Perhaps a guitar or piano are the only instruments available? Not every can afford to maintain an organ, there are fewer and fewer organists avaliable.

I always suggest to those who want to keep organ music in the parish - it is a good idea to send your kids to take organ lessons, this way there will be someone in the next generation who can play it!

From what I understand, there has been no official word from Rome on blessings during Communion

I served in the Marines and I appreciated Mass, whenever we could attend. One time the priest used a pool table that was covered with a cloth for an alter. We were out in the field and had just a small rec room with a pool table. No problem for me with this! Mass back on base in the chapel was pretty much the norm, but keep in mind, the chapel is not a Catholic church, but is shared by other faiths. We also had Mass in an auditorium.

The best part was, we got to eat unconsecrated host, by the handful. For some reason when I was a kid, I always wanted to heat a stack of host. It was great, except a little dry.

Doesn’t the host become consecrated when the priest invoke these words, “This is my Body which will be given up for you.” Again he gives you thanks and praise and take the cup and bless it saying, “Take this all of you and drink from it. This is cup of my blood, the blood of the new covenant which will be given up for you.”

I believe when we eat the Body and Blood of the Lord, it is consecrated. I just want to correct you.

Actually, it was before Mass started. We were outdoors in the field on manuvers. The priest was setting up an altar on a folding table, and he took out a large bag of unconscrated host. He said, “help yourselves.” Being that we were always hungry, we all dug in.

Anyway, regarding Mass in the military, we started attending Mass at a military hospital chapel (two hours from our home) precisely because they were more traditional and orthodox than most parishes! Our son is their sole altar server (he used to be one of three, but the other boys’ father got transferred to another city) and he wears the black cassock and white surplice. Have never seen any liturgical abuses take place in this chapel.

Maybe it’s because it’s a hospital chapel?

No, it didn’t violate the fast, because by the time Mass got started, and when we received Holy Communion, it was more than an hour.
