Are the instructions in the GIRM as well as the Holy Father’s, Redemptionis Sacramentum, optional for all priests? We have an assistant who celebrates Mass “his” way. He jokes around at the beginning and end of Mass with tripe phrases. He violates GIRM by offering self communion to the extra-ordinary ministers and the servers. He uses an extra-ordinary minister to distribute Communion during weekday Masses when there is no large attendance. Should the priest be reminded personally, or should the pastor be advised? Jerome

Hey Jerome, welcome to the Orlando diocese my friend! If you can, talk to the pastor about this. It’s probably the only way you’ll get this fixed. From time to time I use to contact the diocese office if things wouldn’t go well, and to tell you the truth the director of liturgy almost seemed like he welcomed the abuses. One just has to watch the CCTN on Brighthouse Networks to see what I’m talking about for starters.

BTW, are you taking about Holy Redeemer church?

I was reading somewhere that it is against Canon law for more than one Priest to celebrate Mass, and I see it all of the time on EWTN, is this something that also changed with Vatican II, as I find it very distracting with all of those priests up there, and they also took turns doing Mass and the prayers and the Holy Sacrifice, which was I think wrong and something you would never have seen before or with a Traditional Latin Mass thats for sure. Just wondering

You are totally mistaken here. It is perfectly in order for there to be concelebrating priests. Two of them will say parts of the Eucharistic Prayer (after the Consecration). Nothing distracting whatever. And, definitely not a liturgical abuse.

it was until the Council. Concelebration had been strictly forbidden until the liturgical renewal.
