Is having a EF mass outside, in a parking lot, near a busy street reverent?
Would ANY aspect of this be considered a “liturgical abuse?”

I am seriously asking the question here.
Truly, I understand and agree with his motives, but I am not sure this is really the appropriate place to be celebrating the sacred liturgy.

Truly, I understand and agree with his motives, but I am not sure this is really the appropriate place to be celebrating the sacred liturgy.

And would it be any less of an abuse if it were an OF Mass? I’m serious.

The article said it was one of six Masses said at the site during the 40 day for Life campaign. I believe you need permission to say Mass outside of a Church. However, since Bishop Conley was present at at least one of the Masses, I think it is safe to assume they were said with permission.

FWIW, we are accustomed to saying mass over the remains of martyrs and other holy souls.

Perhaps he was unable to say mass on the roof of the building

However, open-air liturgies invite unseemly interference from others and this could lead to sacrilege. I understand the “statement” they are trying to make by having mass there, but I think it’s imprudent.

At least put a baldachin over the altar.

Diocese have rules on this and it usually needs approval (but since the Bishop attended this I think that’s mute). But yes it can be done in that location. It can be done by my beside in the hospital too, or in the battlefield, or even on the deck of a sinking ship. And it can most definitely be done in front of planned parenthood–yes, yes, God Bless that priest.

We need mass every day in front of every planned parenthood facility in America.
