Could anyone please answer this question?

The four Sundays of January 1945 were the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th.

Does that make the 21st the Second or Third Sunday after Epiphany according to the Roman Missal?

Thank you for your help!

The Third Sunday after Epiphany, I think.

But why did you think it would be the Second?

I know Epiphany is on the 6th, so just by counting Sundays it should be the third.

But isn’t Epiphany sometimes celebrated on the Sunday following or preceding the 6th?

I guess I was just confused whether “third Sunday after” referred to the actual 6th or the Sunday it was celebrated…

Do you know what I mean?

Thanks for the reply, by the way!

I think that is a provision only accorrding to the calendar after 1970 to actually trasfer feats to Sunday. There was earlier a provision for “external solemnity” but since the Sunday after Epiphany (or as it was known at the time: the Sunday within the Octave of Epiphany) was assigned to the Holy Family I do not think it would have been possible. But I do not know.

At that time, Epiphany would have been on the 6th, the Sunday within the Octave of Epiphany(7th) would have been the Holy Family, the Octave Day of the Epiphany(supressed 1956) would have been on the 13th and the Second Sunday after Epiphany would have been on the 14th.

The Second Sunday after Epiphany was the Sunday after the Octave Day of the Epiphany. When Epiphany fell on a Sunday (6th), the Octave Day would be on the following Sunday (13th), Holy Family on the Saturday before (12th), and the Second Sunday of Epiphany on the 20th.

Oh! Now I get it.

Once again, that makes sense…

Thanks a lot.
