What Liturgical Color does your Parish or Diocese use for All Souls Day? White, Violet, or Black?

Where do they wear Black?

Never been to an All Souls Day mass, but according to my missile (1962 - Mass of All Time), the priest wears black.

When I went to a downtown Basilica for Mass today I checked the Canadian missal eggs and it indicated white or violet for All Souls in the Ordinary Form.

I’ll be attending my Extraordinary Form parish on Nov 2 and the priest will be vested in black to offer three Masses in a row for All Souls’ Day.

Priests wear Black in the Extraordinary Form for All Souls Day

Priests wear may White, Violet or Black in the Ordinary Form depending on “local custom.” I beleive Black must be approved in the Ordinary Form.

If we go to our local parish it will be white just like they vest for funerals. Unless Father has black vestments tucked away somewhere that is not even an option here.

On the other hand if we go to the FSSP parish it will of course be black. I wish we would see a return to black vestments for funerals and all souls thd OF but I’m not holding my breath.

About questions - - I often think that in this forum area, (liturgy and sacraments), when people post their questions, they might specify in the title line, EF or OF. Because there seem to be people posting about both, sometimes at cross-purposes.

My priest wore gold today.
So did mine, but today is All Saints. The question is about All Souls. 🙂

Tomorrow, my priest will wear violet…as he does every year on All Souls.

Black is worn at the ICRSS oratory.

I think you are thinking of the use of Rose during Lent and Advent, that depends on local custom.

Both the universal GIRM and the modifications for the US support the use of black in Masses for the dead
e) Besides the color violet, the colors white or black may be used at funeral services and at other Offices and Masses for the Dead in the Dioceses of the United States of America

Somehow I misread that it was about All Souls! Thanks for pointing that out!

I am a sacristan (mostly on weekdays) so a few years ago I looked it up in the ordo and it was white, violet or black.

Actually, no. I don’t believe permission is needed for black to be used. The GIRM allows black and purple as universal colors for funerals, though purple is the norm.

You might be thinking of white. White needed an indult from the Holy See to be used. England and Wales and the U.S. have been granted this indult.

Oops, I voted before I noticed it said All Souls not All Saints. I bet a lot of people made that mistake, considering it is All Saints Day.

I agree, perhaps it would have been better for the OP to have posted this tomorrow instead of today, so as to avoid confusion.

On All Hallows Eve, the Monsignor at the Basilica I attend for daily Mass described the difference between All Saints and All Souls because people often confuse them 🙂

Just to be clear, I know the difference between the two 😃

LOL! and it does make sense to post a poll like this on the day of, otherwise folks would usually be thinking as to what Father wore the year prior

My priest wore purple with black accents today. The deacon wore a purple stole. I suspect if the deacon had a black stole, they may have both worn black. I know our priest has black vestments.

At All Souls Mass today…
