What does the Church officially teach about Liturgical dance, either before the mass begins, during or after the mass?

There is a parish that is in disputes and it is causing quite a stir I would like to get them the proper teaching .

It depends upon where you are located. In the western liturgy there is no place for it. There are some other cultures that may have a form that is acceptable for liturgy.

The Church I am speaking of a traditional Roman Catholic Church. The group that wants to do Liturgical dance, well meaning, wants to do it as part of the processional and I believe on other part of the mass. There is a group that is very upset, both are well meaning and just want to do what is right one feels strongly that it adds to celebration and one feels strongly
that it is irreverent. It is causing such bad feelings. I thank you for any and all replies I will be forwarding them these to help them make a good decision based on facts and truth not feelings.
Thanks all!

Glory to Jesus Christ!

I can say with 100% certainty, the Orthodox wouldn’t take it period. 😃

In Christ,
Andrew

Mass begins with “In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, amen…”

I almost walked out on my own confirmation due to a “liturgical dancer” in a leotard. Not only was it off-the-scales inappropriate she was a horrid dancer even in a purely secular sense…

Well, we have Cardinal Mahony in Los Angeles - in his own words…

Now, there are appropriate times for dancing - Even the Scriptures talk of our “mourning being turning into dancing” and of “David dancing before the LORD”. but, One is clearly a spontaneous act of celebration and the other was, and is, an act of WORSHIP. If anyone could show how the dancers in that video were WORSHIPING the LORD OF HOSTS and the Kings of Kings and the Lord of Lords, and doing so “in the beauty of holiness”, I’ll go over to is/her side.

I just don’t think anyone is going to be able to do it…

Here is an example of “Celebratory Dance” before & after the Ordination of a Priest in Torres Strait - Please note - The dance is BEFORE & AFTER MASS and is CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE

This is what Pope Benedict XVI & Cardinal Arinze have both been talking about. I think if the “Progressives” could limit themselves to what the this TAC church in Torres Strait did, we wouldn’t be having all of these debates on this issue.

If Liturgical Dance happens in the parish, then they are clearly “Spirit of Vatican II” types.

The “Spirit of Vatican II” means active participation as well, actively participating.

So if a Liturgical Dance starts up, get up and join them, bust a move, show them all your best break dance, or disco move. Of course you are welcome to paricipate, after all, “performance Masses” went out with Mozart and Bach.

Trust me, they will all fully support your full acceptance of the Spirit of Vatican II and be lovingly amazed at your active participation.

 😛

The so-called liturgical dances of the Ethiopian Church that are brought up by some people are actually a type of procession, and they take place OUTSIDE of the Church.

This was told me by an Ethiopian priest.

I have been to at least a dozen Sunday Masses celebrated by the Cardinal at 10:00 at his cathedral. Aside from the pouring of the Precious Blood each and every one was stone-cold orthodox. It’s sad those Masses don’t make it onto YouTube. He’ll be retired soon enough (2011) yet I’m sure the YouTube repeats will be one of his last legacies.

And some Hawaiians would disagree with you. Hoola has been part of the Mass in some parts of the islands since missionary times.

Can you show me some type of example of this? Thanks I’ll also ask some Hawaiians I know on another board. It’s probably more like the Ethiopian type and not the typical liturgical dance that westerners introduce.

Knowing what I know now, I would have.

Well, they are not supposed to be hula dancing during Mass .

After reading the Adoremus article all I can say is that the first time my priest introduces liturgical dancing in my parish, I will looking else where. And people in the Novus Ordo Mass wonder why there is such vast number of Catholics seeking the Traditional Latin Mass.
Go figure ? ! !

Why do people feel this need to make Mass more EXCITING! and FUN! and INTERESTING! ??? ???

I don’t get it. I honestly don’t. Isn’t the sacrifice, the fact that we are there to be in communion with Jesus Christ enough? Isn’t the fact that Jesus Christ is PRESENT RIGHT THERE enough to make Mass exciting?

A lot of this sounds like it’s coming from the MTV generation. With all the wild camera moves, fast cuts to the next shot, flashy graphics. Will there be a digital sign showing the times of the next event? Will there be an “M.J.” (Mass Jockey) announcing who’s up next?

Honestly. I truly don’t get it.I don’t think there’s going to be anything that can convince me that making the Mass into some sort of concert show will be a good thing.

Sometimes I attend Divine Liturgy here because it can seem far more reverent and somber. Also another reason I love the church I go to and take time to go to. It’s far more reverent and respectful. I’m sure Jesus doesn’t mind dance and song, I’m not saying that. But, uhm… I doubt they had dancers at the last supper “celebrating” his imminent crucifixion. I guess I’m an old fuddy duddy. 🤷

I’m sorry about the mispelling.

Google it. Or visit Hawaii and do some honest to goodness research.
No, You made the statement & you should back it up with your source.
And please, no statement by a secular newspaper or non Catholic media.

Hawaii, IMO, is a far, far left democratic state & anti-Catholic on the whole.

Note, I’m not saying it didn’t happen & there are many forms of hula.
