Liturgical enhancements for Yankee Stadium papal mass revealed

Personally, I kind of like it. šŸ˜‰ But there are Yankees fans I know who will think that Yankee Stadium never needed any liturgical embellishment.

Hve you ever been to St Patricks? There is very little room betwen the doors of the church and 5th Avenue. It would cause a MAJOR disturbance midtown not to mention the mess it would cause for public transportation. Just not practical. The stadium is the best choice, but I would have gone with the Meadowlands and Giants stadium which is not being used at this time of yearā€¦unless it is in the process of being torn down already.

Yes, Iā€™ve been to St. Patricks. And the traffic didnā€™t seem to be moving at all when I walked through midtown one bright Wednesday morning. Lots of horn honking, though. That really seemed to help get the traffic moving, too.

Papa could probably say two Easter Vigils before the people in the cars even realized something was out of the ordinary. Just my perception.

Yes, Iā€™m aware. But it is much more prevalant than it used to be.

My main concern is the danger of the Holy Eucharist being profaned. At the very least, receiving in the hand at these mass Masses should be prohibited. Itā€™s way too easy to pocket a Host and, oh I donā€™t know, sell it on ebay or something. Or do something even worse to it in some dark somewhere.

A reasonable concernā€¦however I donā€™t think the chances of something like that happening are less just because youā€™re in a church.

And frankly, I think the chances are pretty slimā€¦for the papal mass at Yankee stadium they have 40k seats for the ENTIRE countryā€¦here in Chicago you had to be recommended by your pastor just to enter the lottery for ticketsā€¦I donā€™t think the folks from ACTUP are going to be getting into the mass.

It is a very slim chance, but it is also an accepted norm in the US to receive it from the hand, and that is probably the way most will receive it. I expect it to be offered whatever way the person prefers.

God as my witness, I never thought Iā€™d hear anyone other than the resident nun at my parish say that. (And she says it all the time.)

Thatā€™s why weā€™re staying in NJ instead of NYC. (Three of the six of us have tickets for this Mass ā€¦ we are very much looking forward to it.)

Itā€™s for that reason that Pope John Paul II prohibited reception in the hand at his large Masses in the late 90ā€™s.

It came to his attention that some people were keeping the host as a sovenier of the Mass :eek:

So he prohibited it at all of his large Masses after that.

Yikesā€¦sounds like an unintended consequence of the ā€œCult of Papalnessā€ that sprung up under JPII. I personally think B16 does a much better job of not becoming ā€˜the showā€™ (as it were) at his masses. I guess thatā€™s the difference between a stage actor and a professor being the pope.
 
Iā€™m disappointed at the altar set up. I much prefer the ā€œBenedictine Altarā€, with seven candles and the crucifix in the middle, facing His Holiness. It seems this set-up has reverted to the way things were under Piero Mariniā€¦a period in the liturgy I would prefer to forget.

I think it was more along the lines of well meaning, but not well cathechized Catholics wanting a momento of the Mass.

We are only paying $148 at a hotel near La Guardia for Saturday night. Quite reasonable, actually.

I know that the Papal Mass in DC is in a similar situation.

And it isnā€™t just the people, itā€™s the weight of the platform. You can put down concrete pads on infield dirt to support the platform, and just pick them up and rake when yourā€™re done. If you do that on the aerated soil on the outfieldā€¦well lets just say that the Pope would make in impression in more ways that one šŸ˜›

Sure you could design a substrate under the grass that will handle that, but what if that is not already in place.

Disappointing news for those who were hoping to see Pope Benedict XVI make a post-Communion procession around the bases at Sundayā€™s mass in Yankee Stadium: The Vatican is under strict orders to keep the Popemobile (or the Pope Mercedes, for that matter) off the grass where Derek Jeter and Co. practice their own brand of pinstriped religion.

"The Yankees had only one request, and that is that we not touch their grass," said Mark Ackermann, who is running the Office of the Papal Visit for the New York archdiocese. "The All-Star game will be there this year and of course weā€™re all confident that the World Series will be there as well. So the Yankees need to keep it in good shape and weā€™ve been most respectful of that."
All I can say is the the Bombers better make sure they know who theyā€™re dealing with. Yankee Stadium has been the site of two other papal visits and the first ā€” Pope Paul VI in 1965 ā€” coincided with the Yankeesā€™ first losing season since 1925.
Fourteen years later, Pope John Paul II said mass and the '79 team went 89-71, but finished fourth in the AL East. Since the team is currently a middling 7-7, Iā€™m thinking that if Pope Benedict wants to drive the Popemobile in from the bullpen for a relief appearance or out to the mound for a chat with Phil Hughes, the team should by all means let him. Hank Steinbrenner might think differently, but only the Big Guy Upstairs (no, not George) tells the pope what to do.
