Liturgical 'go-go' dancing?

Yikes, they seemed to be appropriately dressed to go to Hooters, not to a ball, and most certainly not to the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
I think it’s also worth noting that, if indeed these women were at a liturgy or even some other event in a church, that somebody chose that they should wear these identical outfits with the slits all the way up to the equator.

This is the kind of BS that keeps me from taking the Catholic Church seriously and converting.

Well, instead of me speculating and assuming, I decided to email the Cathedral where this apparently occurred and find out if it is really true. I just sent it, so I’ll hopefully receive a reply.

A reader sent me the following photos of three girls (I’ve omitted their faces) — dressed rather provocatively — who, er, danced at a recent Franciscan Jubilee Mass for a group of women religious at the cathedral in the Joliet, Ill., Catholic diocese.
I don’t give Matt much credit for posting a photo of this sort without any attending citations. He takes at face value something that “a reader” sent him? Maybe he knew the reader? What is the purpose of sending shock waves to unsuspecting readers of his column? Yes, he did have an agenda, and I suspect our OP also had one in her intention to shock the rest of us.

Personally, I think dirty laundry should be kept in the clothes hamper. There’s an old saying that bees feast on honey, but only the wasps feed on garbage. It goes to show you how eager some folks are to feast on it.

First off Matt Abbott is a well respected honest journalist. What are your credentials to insinuate otherwise.

Secondly I would think the purpose is obvious. To alert people to the disgusting actions that took place.

Thirdly it is rash judgment to assume that he has an agenda.

Fourthly as the OP I am not a she but a He. Like Matt Abbott I share this story because an informed Catholic is a Good Catholic.

he is not an impartial news source. he has no source and no context.

There are too many questions about the three pictures that doesn’t add up. In #1 and #2, the girl has about a 2 inch gap between the straps, one near the neck and another near the shoulder. The gown is almost a light golden paisley. In the picture of the three together, all the gowns are a solid slipper satin, and no double straps on the shoulder. In addition, all the girls’ hair is forward on the front of their upper torso, whereas, the original two pics, the girl’s hair is pulled behind her head.

Sorry, but I would need a little more proof before believing this is a true photo, The photographer seems to have an interest in the derriere of one girl, huh?

The second photo is a dead giveaway that the photos are doctored. Look a the position of the priest’s hand. It’s behind her back which means she would be dancing close to his chest - presumeably with the altar in close proximity. He’s got awful small hands for being in such a position, don’t you think. And the colors of both are not right. I think this is a set-up.

I think the sheer shockness of the photos is causing people here to doubt it. I mean how sick is it when a teenager is wearing a nightgown where one can see their underwear.

However I have re-examined all the photos and they all do match and line up. As for the 2nd photo it would only appear that the Priest’s hand is touching the dancer but that is because of the angle.

I think the first is the give away when compared to the second. In the first, you can see the priest’s feet, as she is below him on another level. Father is reading appropriately from the right.

In the second, she is so much on a par with him as to be in his face, more or less. You cannot see any portion of the altar on which there were several chalices, and the priest is reading from the left with an extended hand. She is just too close to the altar for a dance to have taken place. Room is required. And never have I heard of dancing taking place while the Eucharistic prayers are being prayed. Sometimes it has been done during offertory, or maybe after communion. But this is too bizarre.

Funny, you only see the one girl with the different gown from the others. Where were they? I’m sure the photographer would have done his best to capture all of them dancing.

Nah!

If the priest is standing with the altar in front of him praying over the gifts then there is no angle that would make the woman appear to be in the place of the altar. We should see the altar or the gifts behind the priests hand, not the woman’s back.

These pictures are just off and am I the only one that finds it odd that the person who wrote this article did not cite the source of the pictures and is hiding the identity of the “dancers” when this was a public function and there is no privacy issues in question? Maybe the identities are hidden because the pictures are of a questionable nature?

I wondered how long it would take for the old old old old clown picture to surface. Anyways, its not even a valid comparison.

Well, I for one, as a red blooded American Catholic male have to give this a big, “WOO-HOO!”. Most “Liturgical dancewear” is long, flowing robes (sometimes complete with accompanying liturgical undergarments), which is unattractive to the concupiscient eye. They dance and skip around in somewhat graceful movements. It’s all very girly. What we often complain about is men not coming to Mass. So I say, “Let the ladies dress such and Go Go Go!”

Concerning Fr. Charles, I used to encounter him quite a bit at St. Peter’s in the Loop back in the day. Some people would consider him somewhat theologically left. But one thing was always certain to me. His devotion to the Mass. he never realy messed with the Mass in any inappropriate way and typically maintained a particular fidelity to it’s being celebrated well.

Chrismyster,

It looks like those pixels are part of the chalice that was on the altar, which the cropper failed to remove.

In the first picture, what is the strange lighting by the girl’s hair on the right side? There should be no glare from the candle near the altar, and it seems to blend oddly with her hair.
