Does anyone know a source for Catholic hymnody with piano accompaniment, In particular, the mass responses, the Gloria, Lord’s Prayer, the Amens, and common hymns? I am a catholic convert accustomed to 4 part hymn singing as presented in protestant hymnals rather than melody only song books or “hear & repeat” :harp:rote responses to a cantor. I have not located a Catholic piano hymnal. Is there one? jrv

Check out the Adoremus Hymnal. Also for even more traditional hymns buy yourself a spiral bound edition of the St. Gregory’s Hymnal.

Check out the publisher GIA and look for a hymnal’s “choir edition.” The hymnal called “Worship” has the best collection of traditional hymns.

Also, you can purchase the organ/piano accompaniment spiral bound books for the Worship hymnals. We use the red Worship hymnals at our parish and they are one of the better resources for good traditional hymns. If you can find the old choir St. Gregory Hymnals and Pope Pius hymnals they are good as well for accompaniment.

Whatever publisher makes the melody-only songbooks you’re referring to surely makes an ancillary keyboard accompaniment book; that book would include through-composed piano accompaniments for most of the songs and for hymnody, the 4-part SATB accompaniments you’re probably familiar with. Check with the specific book publishers for those details.

Poke around in the choir loft and in their cabinets I found ours by accident. They look just like the regular ones,except thicker. I now swipe one for every Mass so I can read the harmony.

Just leave the thread in. It may help someone else.

And it may convince certain anti-piano Catholics that we pianists really do care about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and that we aren’t all lounge lizards sitting up there improvising jazz licks to “entertain” the “audience” so that they’ll applaud for us.
