Liturgy Abuse Re Eucharist?

Have just experienced mass where the congregation received communion before the priest and the extraordinary ministers. Where has this come from? I always understood the sacrifice of the mass was completed once the priest had received communion and as he is in persona christi should received first - then the congregation

This is a major abuse which Rome has actually addressed. It stems from a bad ecclesiology imposing the phrase “the first shall be last” to the reception of communion which is a poor place to put that interpretation of the Church.
