…why I wasn’t sorry about leaving my old parish.
A longtime friend invited me to attend the Holy Day Mass in my former parish church this evening because a new priest had been assigned.
I knew of this priest. He had been booted from his pastorate where he was extremely popular because, although an Anglo, he spoke beautiful Spanish and understood the Latino culture. He was reported to be pretty orthodox, at least for our diocese.
He was reassigned as a “parochial vicar” in a parish that is 25% Hispanic and the bishop had promised a Spanish-speaking priest for several years.
This evening, shortly after he and the deacon had addressed the altar, two altargirls dashed up the aisle with a candle and the processional crucifix, then placed both out of sight at the outer wall of the sanctuary.
The priest also signalled the choir, guitarists, pianist and bongo drummer to stop. It was really okay because the loud screaming of a small child was drowning them out anyway.
At the conclusion of a good homily, the priest invited the entire congregation to the sancturary, where they formed a ring around him, the deacon, and four EMHCs at the altar. So much for orthodoxy.
During the consecration utilizing some very attractive wine glasses, a small child was allowed to crawl around and under the altar. At various times, the congregation, with exception of a few who elected to stay in the pews, joined in the orans position. Of course the crowd in the sanctuary joined hands for the Padre Nuestro (Our Father).
The recessional was an appropriate Marian hymn in Spanish, accompanied by the amplified bongo drums, with the priest sprinting out the side door… there was no kneeling.

Is there any hope that Pope Benedict XVI’s desire for a more reverent Mass will ever become reality? Hey, Father, what does
GIRM mean?

Well…we have a new Pastor who is determined to do things his way and his way only and says that because our previous Pastors followed the GIRM so closely that they did our Parish a disservice…He even said that his dividing the parish by doing the Liturgy “his way” may be something that “has to happen.” I thought that was such a Pastoral comment. It still has be extremely mad.

So, we will be parish hopping again. 😦

In the meantime, I am doing my duty…letters have gone out to the Archbishop…and since this seems to be an every few years thing for us in the Archdiocese…I will be sending letters to the Papal Nuncio and the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments because truthfully I am tired of it.

On another note…I am seriously thinking of not giving my tithe to any Parish in this Archdiocese (unless I find an orthodox parish which is becoming more and more difficult in this Archdiocese) and just simply sending my major contributions to Dioceses that are orthodox (such as the Diocese of Lincoln, NE) and other apostolates that promote orthodoxy (such as Catholic Answers and EWTN)…I really believe it is time that the Laity stand up and vote with our pocketbooks…Maybe this will get their attention.

With all due respect…I cannot fathom why that would be “pastoral”. Dividing a parish like that is a very bad idea…what little unity there is will certainly be snuffed out. I have a situation similar to that in my parish…where us traditionalists go to the early Mass (naturally) and the progressives go to the late Mass (but of course). Its basically two parishes. The Traditionalists ( the ones who show up for holy days, church picnics, renovation projects, church decorations, Catechism, coffee and rolls, etc etc.) and the Progressives (the ones who show up on Sunday).

The two groups rarely mingle and to the animosity is palpable.

I took the Pastoral comment as sarcastic. Is that how you meant it jschwehm
