First off, forgive me if this has been asked and answered a million times before here.

I know there is a substantial difference between the Latin Rite Mass and the Divine Liturgy (I’ve only ever had occasion to attend a Ukrainian Greek Catholic DL service), but is there a substantial difference between the Divine Liturgy in a Church similar to the UGCC and say Greek Orthodox (apart from the licity)?

Thanks all!

Chris

Lots of little differences in which litanies are taken, what petitions are in them, and whether they get repeated.

Some (usually minor) differences in wording due to translation issues.

Orthodox won’t commemorate the Pope.

Slight differences in cut of vestments.

A better comparison might be Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox.

All Orthodox liturgies and sacraments are licit.

Comparing UGCC and Greek Orthodox is like comparing apples and pears. Both fruits are of the pomme family, but as anyone who has eaten them knows, are distinctly different. Better, as Cluny said, to compare UGCC and Ukrainian Orthodox.

Melkites, Antiochian Orthodox, Romanian Orthodox and Greek Catholics, Ruthenians, Carpatho-Russians, OCA, and Russian Orthodox (to name a few) all use local variants of the Divine Liturgies of St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil, and the Presanctified Gifts.

The real wonder is how, without a Sacred Congregation of Rites, these recensions are all so much the same.

Thanks. That is pretty much what I was looking for.

I thought the Catholic church regarded them as illicit such that they would not fulfill the Sunday obligation. Or is valid the right word?

Sorry about that . . . rookie mistake?

Thanks for the replies.

in the West, the Holy Spirit descends before the narrative, and in the East its after the narrative.
