I am wondering if it’s OK to use the Pre Vat II Mass and Liturgy of the Hours. Aren’t all liturgical functions supposed to be done according the changes made at VAT II? At my local Catholic bookstore they stock Missals and the Breviary from the early 60’s. They seem to sell a lot of them but I don’t know of any church where mass is still said that way. I attend a Latin Mass each Sunday, the language is Latin but the rite is the Ordo Novo Missae.

Thank you. Nicolas

The pre Vatican 2 mass and all the prayers and other practices before V2 were never abolished. It is completely legitimate both for a priest to say the traditional latin mass and for the faithful to attend it. It is the mass I always attend and is what brought me to convert to the faith.

Thank you.

This is taken from the present Liturgy of the Hours:

APOSTOLIC CONSTITUTION PROMULGATION

THE DIVINE OFFICE
REVISED BY DECREE OF THE
SECOND VATICAN ECUMENICAL COUNCIL

PAUL, BISHOP
Servant of the Servants of God
For an Everlasting Memorial

“…We decree that this new Liturgy of the Hours may be brought into use as soon as it is published. Meanwhile, the episcopal conferences should see to the preparation of editions of this liturgical work in the vernacular and, after approval and confirmation by the Apostolic See, should fix the date when vernacular versions may or must be used, either in whole or in part. Beginning on the day when these vernacular versions are to be used for vernacular celebrations, only the revised form of the Liturgy of the Hours is to be followed by those who continue to use Latin.

It is lawful, however, for those who because of advanced age or for special reasons experience serious difficulties in observing the new rite, to continue to use the former Roman Breviary, in whole or in part, with the consent of the Ordinary, and exclusively in individual recitation.

We wish that these decrees and prescriptions be firm and effective now and in the future, notwithstanding, to the extent necessary, Apostolic Constitutions and Ordinances issued by our predecessors, and other prescriptions, even those deserving particular mention and derogation.

Given at Rome, at Saint Peter’s, on the feast of All Saints, November 1, 1970, the eighth year of our pontificate.

PAUL VI, POPE

So I take it that although the Pre Vat II liturgy was never formally abolished it has been "officially"replaced by the liturgical reforms of VAT II. Would you say that’s a correct statement?

Thank you.

That’s right. Only the new one is to be used, unless one has permission from his ordinary.

Since the time that the current Liturgy of the Hours was approved for use, the Church has approved of several “Traditional” communities. These communities have the approval to use the 1962 Roman Missal AND Breviary (LOTH). Those who follow such communities, or attach themselves in some way to them, are allowed to legitimately pray the Divine Office according to their own spirituality.

This is especially true for the monks of the Clear Creek Monastery, who also have Oblates attached to their community.
