anyone know where i can get a history of the evolution of the liturgy (mass)?
 
The most complete that I know of is The Mass of the Roman Rite: Its Origins and Development By Fr. Joseph Jungmann, SJ. This work dates from the 1940s and 50s so it does not address development since Pius XII, but is otherwise good in its coverage. There are two volumes in the paperback version of this. There are other, shorter works, but none that have the scope of this one.

There’s another book by the Anglican Benedictine, Dom Gregory Dix, THE SHAPE OF THE LITURGY.

It’s easy to see how this book influenced liturgical reform in both Anglican and Roman communions.

Another book available on line free for the download (though don’t ask me where) is THE MASS OF THE WESTERN RITES.
 
The Mass of the Early Christians by Mike Aquila is a good source, as is the original Spirit of the Liturgy by Msgr. Romano Guardini, the precursor to the book of the same name written by Pope Benedict XVI.

I would also get my hands on books written by Dom Alcuin Reid, especially his work, The Organic Development of the Liturgy. You might also want to read the encyclical of Pope Pius XII, Mediator Dei. It offers some good insights on the Mass.

  • The Organic Development of the Liturgy (Dom Alcuin Reid)
  • Notes on the Catholic Liturgies (Archdale A. King)
The Mass of the Western Rites (which I have not read) is available free of charge at EWTN’s web site.
