I’ve been using the 1-volume “Christian Prayer” book for my liturgy of the hours, and think its time for me to graduate to the 4-volume so I can do the office of readings. But I became confused when trying to find the books to purchase online.

The 4 books I"m most familiar with is the Blue, Red, Brown, and Green set published in 1973. However, when I went to purchase them from Amazon, Amazon said they had a set of 4 published in 1999? And then when I went to this site: thykingdomcomenow.com/Liturgy%20of%20the%20Hours.htm
They had a 4-book set where all the books were black.

So if anyone can answer: What is the difference between these three, if any? What do you recommend?

Thanks!
Josh

It looks just like the set I have, the real leather covers are black and the imitation leather covers are colors (or vice versa, I can’t tell the difference). My set is from Catholic book Publishers date 1975, with scripture readings from NAB 1970, and psalms except psalm 95 from the Grail psalter, Ps 95 from NAB, I don’t know for sure but would guess the newer set has the revised NAB psalms. There is a lot of debate about which is better. Who is the publisher?

I am a seminarian and familiar with both the “colored” and “black” sets of the Liturgy of the Hours. I have the colored 4 volume which was given to me as a gift. The colored ones will wear down more quickly and the paper is not quite as white as the black set. The black set also has the gold color on the very edge of the pages. I would get the black set if you are buying a new set because it should last a little longer. They should both be the same wording wise though. I hope you have a fruitful experience with your new liturgy of the hours. Oremus pro invicem (Let us pray for one another)

I would only add that this is quite an investment and I strongly urge anyone getting started with LOTH to pray faithfully every day using Shorter Christian Prayer for at least a year, and make sure this habit is firmly rooted, before taking such an expense. along with good spiritual reading and the daily lectionary, you will have plenty of matter for reading and meditation. Luckily I received mine as a gift when my brother opted to go back to Latin (with permission of his spiritual director who guides him in his eremetical life).

Mine came with the vinyl covers, but they get unpleasently sticky to hold in this climate, so I made a cloth cover which I just switch with each season, and hand wash from time to time. I also made one for my bible and missal. I used a sturdy dark cotton/poly blend duck fabric, cut to size and hemmed, folded on the pattern of the paper book covers we used to use in school, stitched to hold it in place.

I’ve noticed that the New Testament readings for Shorter Christian Prayer differ somewhat from my 4 vol. set.

Are they using the 1986 revision of the NAB?
Are the 4 vol LOTH currently being sold still using the 1970 version?

I think there is a version of the 4 vol out there with inclusive language. i have the 1 volume, and often if im saying an hour with a priest i know his 4 vol will say “people” and “ascestors” and “God/God’s” instead of “man(kind)” “fathers” and “He/Him/His” respectively.

… or maybe thats just Father editing on the fly.

Yes, Shorter Christian Prayer uses the 1986 NAB NT, while the 4-vol and the one-volume Christian Prayer use the 1970 translation even today.
