I have to go to NYC this Sunday and will almost certainly have to attend the liturgy there. For those that live in the city or go to church there, which church would you suggest? I’m looking for an “orthodox” church, no guitars and the likes, where I can get a solemn service (if in Latin, then all the better, but I’m not that picky about it). Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Our Saviour is a gorgeous church, very traditional, and is a lovely stroll down several blocks from Grand Central Station. It would be worth it just to see that part of NYC from the sidewalk-- it explains the “Park” in Park Avenue… 🙂

Go to historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The principal mass on Sunday is said by the cardinal, can’t get much more “orthodox” than that and it is a major American landmark that I’m sure that you’d want to see anyhow.

Although I’m in NYC weekly, I don’t usually attend mass there, BUT I have attended mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral during the week and a couple of Sundays. The masses I’ve attended there have always been solemn and the priest from the last mass I attended was really good - very orthodox. They have a pretty good music program there as well. Never attended a mass there with guitars, although I never went there on a Sunday night, so I’m not sure if they do anything of the sort then.

I went there today. Simply wonderful! I attended a sung mass. It was very reverent, and I felt the same way as when I went to the SSPX mass - very small and humble. The homily was also inspiring. It kept me thinking the rest of the day. It was really incredible to go to a mass where there was actually silence and no phones ringing. The church itself was beautiful. I especially loved the ikons (I’m partial to those), the stations of the cross (I really should learn how to pray these someday) with sayings, as well as the “It is good for us to be here” written in capital letters above the opening to the altar.

Ah, if only I lived in NYC…

Fr. Richard John Neuhaus celebrates mass daily at Immaculate Conception Church in the East Village (corner of 1st Ave and 14th Street).

I went last week. What a joy and blessing to attend an intimate mass in a small church with one of the most famous priests in the USA!

If you’re in New York City, you can call the rectory the day before to find out which mass he will be celebrating.

Just wanted to share this because I really like Fr. Neuhaus.

Where in the city? There are literally hundreds of parishes split between NY and Brooklyn dioceses.

In general, the NY Archdiocese is quite orthodox.

If you specify a neighborhood, people could help more.

God Bless
