Does the entire congregation say the concluding Eucharistic prayer, through Him, with Him etc.? I thought the priest said the concluding prayer and the congregation said, “Amen”. I have been to different churches and I have seen it done both ways. Just wondering which one was correct.

No, those words are reserved for the priest. Our response is the great Amen. It has become fashionable in some parishes in dioceses inhabited by some feminist priestess-wannabees to chime in here, but it is not allowed.

I had one old Irish priest try that. He asked the whole congregation to join in. I refused. This was the same guy who ended Mass by saying, “Have a nice day!” And he was dithering at the ambo after the homily looking for the Prayers of the Faithful. After he found them he said, “Obviously, I should have gone to reahearsal before Mass. Saints preserve us!” OK, he didn’t really say, “Saints preserve us!” But the rest is true.

That would be a infringement of the rules, as the priest is actually supposed to read the mass from the missal and not rely on his memory.

I don’t think that “have a nice day” is a greeting in any approved missal.

Well, no, I didn’t think it was approved. But I didn’t have the heart to be a Liturgical Cop at that Mass. The guy was like a little leprechaun. Quite amusing. :rotfl:

You are correct, Lizbert. This is only to be said by the priest.

Here is the relevant passage from the GIRM:
151…At the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest takes the paten with the host and the chalice and elevates them both while alone singing or saying the doxology, Per ipsum (Through him). At the end the people make the acclamation, Amen
And if the Mass is concelebrated by other priests:
236. The concluding doxology of the Eucharistic Prayer is spoken solely by the principal priest celebrant and, if this is desired, together with the other concelebrants, but not by the faithful.
