In reality this is a question for all the ordained members of the forum but I’m posting it openly hoping that maybe someone might have experience with this situation or might have an answer.

What I wanted to know is if someone who is obligated to say the liturgy of the hours (say a deacon) says his prayers with a community but does not say the correct hour (for the feast or celebration) does this satisfy the requirement to offer the office.

The situation is this. Tonight is the 1st vespers of the solemnity of the Sacred Heart. There was a group gathering tonight for a meeting in my parish and I decided to stay and say vespers with them since this is how they begin the meeting each week. However, the only books available to read from were “Shorter Christian Prayer” which does not contain the proper parts for this feast day (I think it has the prayer but I couldn’t find it). Does saying all the psalms, readings and petitions from the current day of the Psalter satisfy the obligation even though its a feast day?

Technically, I’m not obligated to say the hours but I was just curious about this. Any help would be appreciated.

This is all I could find. I hope it helps.

Chapter IV-1
  1. ARRANGEMENT OF THE OFFICE FOR SOLEMNITIES
  2. Solemnities have an evening prayer I on the preceding day.
  3. At evening prayer I and II, the hymn, the antiphons, the short reading with its responsory, and the concluding prayer are proper. Where anything proper is missing, it is supplied from the common.
