Hello. I have started praying the Liturgy of the Hours, 4 Volume Set, published in 1976 by Catholic Book Publishing Corp. It says that the Bible readings (not including Psalms) come from the NAB 1970 Edition. However, I looked up Hebrews 12:1-13 (that appears on page 439 of Volume 2) in the 1970 NAB and the wording is different. I don’t think it is from the NABR or the Jerusalem Bible either. I really like the translation used in the Liturgy of the Hours, and would like to find a Bible that uses it, if there is one. BTW a sample of the text reads “Let us lay aside every encumbrance of sin which clings to us and persevere in running the race which lies ahead…”. If anyone uses the 4 Volume set, can you look this up in your copy and let me know what you think? A second related but less important question is why the ribbon placement recommendations on the Divine Office App for the iPhone have different page numbers than the Volume 2 that I have. Has anyone noticed this? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Because you probably don’t have a “real” 1970 NAB. What you most likely have is an NAB that has the Old Testament from 1970, the revised New Testament from 1986, and the awful Psalms from 1991.

Yes actually that’s what it looks like I have. Is there another edition that matches up with the Liturgy of the Hours, at least for the Biblical Readings not including the Psalms? Can you recommend one, possibly including the ISBN? Thanks.

No. You would have to find a NAB First Edition (1970 Edition).

They are out of print, but you can find some on eBay

I’m not sure but I think you can virtually borrow a EPUB or PDF copy the 1970 New American Bible online for 14 days for free from Internet Archive, here, once you sign up for an account. That might be the easiest way to see if its a 1970 New American Bible that you want.

OK great! Thanks. I’ll check out those links. I appreciate it.

One additional question. The Copyright Date for the Grail Psalms in the Liturgy of the Hours is 1963 - says “Grail (England) 1963”. Have they ever been revised or will a current copy of those match up? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Yes, a revised Grail Psalter by Conception Abbey is what’s approved for the new translation of the Liturgy of the Hours, a project currently ongoing.
