Does anyone know if the Breviary is available in a format consistent with the Liturgical calendar pre-VII? I’ve been saying the Liturgy of the Hours for 6 years. The Liturgy of the Hours (as it’s recited today) is based on the issue published in 1970, and follows the NO Liturgical Calendar.

My parish began celebrating the Latin Mass about 4 years ago, and since then, I attend only the TLM. However, I’m continually frustrated trying to reconcile the Trad Calendar with new Lit Cal. Today was the tipping point! In the NO, today is Epiphany; in the old Calendar, Epiphany is Tuesday (12 days post Christmas). This transferring of the Solemnity is more than a mere timing issue; it’s a distortion of the Christmas season.

I’d like to continue reciting the Lit of the Hours, as it facilitates my daily prayer life. But I’d like to be able to recite the Psalms and readings from the Douay Reams version, and to follow the old Lit Cal.

If such a thing is available, Paul Seguin would know about it. You have to phone him; he doesn’t read his e-mail.

Actually, in the Ordinary calendar, Epiphany is January 6, just like in the Extraordinary calendar. However, the Bishops’ Conferences were given the authority to move it to the Sunday between January 2 and 8. In the U.S. and Canada, they exercised that option.

This might help:

There is a site where the Roman Breviary in English and Latin is available:

www.breviary.net

Beware–this is NOT according to the 1961 (or so) rubrics, but an earlier usage.

Also Baronius Press is publishing a bi-lingual Latin/English breviary soon.

And if you’re interested in the Monastic Breviary (which differs in Psalter usage and other details) from the Roman Secular breviary, write me privately.
