I am about to purchase a four volume set of the liturgy of the hours but i recently heard that the LOH might be changing when the new missle comes out next year. I don’t think I want to spend $150 to buy the 4 volumes if it is going to change so soon so I may opt to buy a 1 volume version istead.

Does anyone know if the LOH is for sure changing?

They haven’t even begun working on any revision of the LOH yet. Last I heard we might have a new translation in about 10 years.

Also what I heard. I’m pretty sure the NT of the Mass took pretty long too, but it just wasn’t “in the spotlight” until the last year or two. I’m guessing the same thing will happen with LOTH.

honestly I would opt to buy the 4 volume set. Not a lot has changed with the LOTH in ages. I own the 1 volume Christian Prayer and I don’t know sometimes, I feel that I should have the Franciscan or the 4 Volume set. Seems the one volume set is just to small. Some people still use their old Bevarie

To clear up a point of confusion-
there is no new missal.

What we in America, and all other English speaking countries are getting is a new translation of the missal into English that is a more “literal” translation from the original Latin and not the “dynamic” translation we have used for the past 40 years.

I too, have heard that there was a re-translate in the works for the LOH, and that it may be 5-10 years, or more before that is out.

I would also go ahead and purchase the 4-volume LOTH. A new translation will take years and years and so in the meanwhile you’ll be using the best possible English version of the 1970 Breviary. Especially for the Office of Readings I find the 4-volume edition far superior to Christian Prayer. And anyways… your $150 is going to a worthy cause! 🙂

Thanks for the help everyone. I placed my order for the 4 volume and can’t wait to get it 🙂

I you need help using it, go here. divineoffice.org/

This is the best site on the web for learning how to use the LOTH put out by Catholic Book Publishing.

It tells you where to place your ribbons in your brivary for the day and also there is a free
instruction audio available.

The Missal may not entirely be new but it’s certainly a revised one. What we’re getting is the English translation of the third typical edition not just a translation of the first typical edition. It’s the English translation of the first typical edition we have now.

I just received the most recent copy of the BCDW Newsletter and it mentioned that the LOTH is basically in the talking stage, which means they are discussing revising it but they have several other rituals to work on before even starting the LOTH. Since it took over 8 years to revise the missal, as I said earlier, I don 't see it happening for 10 years. Although it might be a bit easier to revise since they already have the revised Grail Psalter and the collects will most likely correspond to the Mass collects. What I wonder is if they will dispense with the Psalm Prayers.

I don’t care for them. Their style, specifically. Like the “alternative opening prayer” in the U.S. missal, they are apparently original compositions written in the vernacular and just too-- how can I put it-- “gushy?” Not sure how to express it with precision but the style seems out of step with the rest of the Office.

I think someone mentioned in a thread a while back that they also exist in the French translation, and someone else mentioned that they’re part of a monastic tradition or something.

Don’t you like them?
The Psalm Prayers, like the Alternative Prayers for Mass and the Hours on Sundays, are not in the Latin Liturgia Horarum, but were composed by members of ICEL, the commission that compiled the English translation of the Liturgy of the Hours, and the Sacramentary in current use in the English speaking world.

The Alternative Prayers will not be in the new English Roman Missal - at least, that’s what I’ve heard. I imagine the same would be true for the Psalm Prayers when one day we get a new English Liturgy of the Hours.

I have a French Benedictine version of the LOTH; it’s actually not the same psalm ordering as the LOTH (it does the entire psalter in 1 week instead of 4, but the rest… collects, intercessions, etc. are identical), but it has the psalm-prayers.

The French official version of the LOTH does not however. I don’t know if the single-volume “Prière du temps présent” has them or not as I don’t use it (that’s more or less the French equivalent to the 1-volume Christian Prayer).

I don’t think they’re part of any Benedictine tradition, I don’t know if they’re part of any other order’s tradition. I have a pre-Vatican II monastic breviary and there’s no such thing in it, and my post-Vatican II Psautier Monastique (Latin-French version of Psalterium Monasticum) doesn’t have them either.

In reading “From Breviary to Liturgy of the Hours”, they do appear to be a post-Vatican II innovation. They are not compulsory and I don’t use them. As I am chanting the Monastic breviary these days, which takes me a full 2-3/4 or so hours a day to complete (and that’s with Vigils spread over 2 weeks), I have precious little time left for them.

It’s my understanding that there was to be a volume of Psalm-prayers in the Latin version, but they never materialized, so ICEL composed their own. Under the current translation guidelines, these would not appear in any new English editions.

There is also a two-year cycle of the first readings from the OoR that is included (through Biblical references only) in the back of the Christian Prayer book. I had read somewhere that there was to be a two-year cycle of the patristic readings, but it was delayed and Pope Paul VI asked that it be realigned as a one-year cycle and released immediately. I don’t know if that is true, but there is occasionally talk about work still being done on the two-year cycle of patristic readings, which would necessitate a new Latin edition of the Liturgia Horarum. This is sometimes given as another reason why an English translation is far down the road.
