The Liturgy of the Hours goes through the Psalter over the course of four weeks. It is divided into four sections, one for each week.

How do I know which week/section to use? More specifically, how is the week determined?

If you would like some context: I am working on a program that loads the Divine Office onto your computer. Currently it includes all four weeks of the Psalter, but I want to make it only include the current week of the Psalter (so the user does not have to figure out which week he is on, or try to pray all of them).

If you look in the proper of seasons, it will tell you which week you’re on. So the first week in Ordinary Time is week 1 of the Psalter, second week is week 2, and so on. Ordinary Time week 5 then would be back to week 1. The first week of Advent is the first week of the Psalter, the first week of Lent is too. Sometimes Psalms are proper to the day and don’t come from the four week cycle

Just to specify, in the Proper of Seasons you will look at the Sunday of the week you’re in - there will be a rubric at the top of the first page for that Sunday that will give the week of the Psalter.
