I am relatively new to the Liturgy of the Hours, and I pray with the book called “Christian Prayer.” Regarding the hymns, I would appreciate some feedback on what hymns I am allowed to use.

Question 1:
Today is the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, and for Morning Prayer in week 4 of the psalter it says “HYMN, no. 9 or 19. Outside ordinary Time, see Guide, 1502.” Now, do I have to use hymn #9 or #19, or can I choose any of the hymns in the Liturgical Guide for Hymns listed under Morning Prayer for Ordinary Time?

Question 2:
Can I sing “Holy God, we praise thy name” for Morning Prayer even though it is listed under the hymns for Night Prayer?

Question 3:
What about hymns which are not listed in my book? Can I sing “Veni Sancte Spiritus” as in the link

Now, I know that many people would say, “Well, you’re not under a vow to pray the Liturgy of the Hours every day so it doesn’t matter.” But, if someone can answer my questions, I would be thankful.

Can’t answer the question but you might like this:

Does your church do morning prayer? It’s Liturgy of the hours , a good way to learn, or ask your Priest for help, or download iBreviary or Laudate

The hymns are merely suggestions. There are hymns that make more sense lyrically for morning or evening, but one of my priestly forementors told us that in private recitation he uses three hymns from the end of Easter until Advent.

YEah, we pray MidMorning prayer together as a staff, and the DEacon always wants to fit the sords into the one hymn tune he knows. (Bless his heart)
Sometimes I look them up in advance by the hymnody, but many times all I can find are old versions fro other churches. I really wish there was a published booklet for the various hymns, so many people would buy it!
