I recently completed transcribing all the hymns from the liturgy of the hours, and a few psalm tones to a digital format so that new students at my seminary can learn the melodies, they are midi format and use the “church organ” instrument.
For those of you who know midi sounds, you know the church organ instrument (on a basic computer sound card, no special synthesizer banks) is not that great, do you think the basic acoustic piano would be a better choice, or is there another instrument you recommend.

I can email you the project if you want an example (its about 400k)

Oh, and if anyone knows a way to change the instrument or a TON of midi files all at once, that would be nice too, since I have about 390 songs to edit otherwise

What software programmes are you using, Brain?

I’ve used some of the MIDI flute and recorder sounds in the past for easy-on-the-ears playback of keyboard parts and aural melody learning purposes - try some of those, or even one of the less way-out “synth” sounds. The MIDI organ sounds are pretty 'orrible and the piano gets very percussive and tiring - gentler sustained sounds seem to work better.

I’ve even used selected and layered flute/recorder/synth sounds when I’ve had to play a MIDI keyboard rather than use that full-on “organ” sound.

Thanks for the advice
Well, it’s worth what you paid for it. 😛 I just sometimes spend hours playing stuff back to check for errors and fiddling with arrangements and playing the same stretch of music over and over and I have to consider the sanity of others in the house!

What software are you using to transcribe the music and produce the MIDI files?

Anvil Studio.
It was free, and sufficient for the simple 1 instrument melodies in LOTH

The problem is not with the instrument chosen, but with the sound font of the midi player you are using. If you played the midi file on a digital keyboard, you’d probably notice a vast improvement.

I find that Eric Welsh’s sound fonts (eawpatches) for timidity are decent.
