Liturgy of the Hours / OOR Questions

Since tomorrow is a Memorial, would it not be
“Come, let us worship God, wonderful in his saints (alleluia)”
or
“Let us sing praise to God, as we acclaim Saints Joachim and Ann (alleluia)”
?

One thing I haven’t been able to work out is when the alleluias here are said. My guess is that it is on Solemnities, not Memorials or Feast days, nor ever during Lent. (What about Sundays?) Maybe somebody knows the answer?

First of all, since it’s a memorial, you have the option of using either the Weekday antiphon or the Common antiphon.

If you opt for the commons, there are two. You can say either antiphon, since it’s an “or” thing.

The Alleluias after antiphons, if enclosed in parentheses, are said during the Easter season only.

Thanks. I think I read in a pamphlet that the Memorials must be observed, but “optional memorials” (those days without “(Mem)” beside it in the ordo) are the ones that are optional. So, e.g. St. Henry on the 13th was an optional memorial, but the 26th is ranked as a Memorial so you cannot properly choose between just the usual weekday, or the prayers as written for Sts. Joachim and Ann.

I’m really not an expert on this (obviously–I’m the one asking questions! ), so I’m just explaining why I chimed in with this. The pamphlet I’m thinking of is “How to Pray the Liturgy of the Hours” by Judith Kubicki, CSSF.

Anyway, to be sure, I’ve done both (observed and not observed memorials) anyway.

Thanks for letting me know about the “(alleluia)” thing. I didn’t realize that the brackets meant just during Easter. I thought it was Easter plus other days of a certain rank.

Yes, obligatory memorials must be observed, but if you look at the Ordinary, it’s clear from the rubrics that during Memorials (optional or obligatory), you have the choice of Invitatory antiphon from either the Weekday or the Common, unless Proper.

Don’t feel bad about that. There is so much there in the Divine Office that it is easy to miss something.
