Liturgy of the Hours question...

That’s likely the difference, in the St. Joseph’s Guide for the Liturgy of the Hours it’s Common of Religious. In my breviary, pg. 1528 of Vol. III, it says “Common of Holy Men: Religious (pg. 1858)”, which is also what the Ordo says (that priests use). Are you sure yours doesn’t say Common of Holy Men: Religious?

It does: Common of Holy Men, Religious–which in my 1 volume is page 1414 and has the psalms/canticles of Sunday week 1. It does say in the "how-to"s that the psalms, readings etc. may be taken from either the weekday OR the Commons.

Yes I forgot you are using the 1 volume. There are obviously some things pared down more simply going from 4 volume to 1 volume. I don’t have it, so I can’t check.

IMHO there is no “wrong” - any attempt to pray the liturgy to God every day is a good thing!

From what I have seen, the UK translation is far superior. I don’t know why the Church feels English-speaking countries should not have the same translation. The differences are not that great!

I have to admit, I wish that the American LOTH did not use the New American Bible. The NAB is to watered down for prayer. Maybe it’s ok for people who are studying the Bible who cannot handle older translations of the Bible but for the LOTH I’d love to see a much stronger Bible translation in use!

The psalms in the American LOTH are not the NAB but the Grail texts, except for Ps. 95. The readings are the NAB.

hi all

I just got the 3 Volume Divine Office there from my priest as a random gift and I have been struggling with it. I know we are in the 14th Week of Ordinary Time, but what week for the Psalter? 1,2,3 or 4?

In Ordinary Time you can always figure out what week of the Psalter we are in by dividing the number of the week (we’re in week 15 now) by 4. The remainder is the week of the Psalter. Divide 15 by 4 and you get a remainder of 3. We’re in week 3. When there is no remainder, you know it is in week 4.

Great math trick! The correct Psalter week is also listed at the beginning of each Sunday’s section in the Proper of Seasons.
