Liturgy of the Hours question

It’s not actually that much of a surprise as I found out. Out of several sound-playing programs on my computer (a Mac), I only found 2 that work. One of them is Quicktime 7 (which is a version that is now deprecated, and only available as an optional install on OSX 10.6) and Realplayer. And nobody uses Realplayer anymore (I actually have no idea why I have it on my computer at all).
Surprisingly, Quicktime X (which is the newest version that’s “suppose to play everything”) doesn’t work. Even more of a surprise is that VLC doesn’t play them out of the box. I’m not sure about WMP (I’m pretty sure it could at one time if it doesn’t now).

I had to use a bit of a roundabout method to convert them (I’ve sent TheMc the files) that involved playing them into a virtual “set of speakers” (Soundflower), which could them be captured by another program for recording (Audacity, which for some reason can’t natively convert midi’s).

Huh. Interesting. I’ve always used WMP, but I was also somewhat surprised to find that VLC doesn’t play them.

But no fear!! Our friend curlycool89 just PMed me the Mp3s of the MIDIs, so you can listen, even if MIDI’s don’t work for you.

I you are obliged to praye the Liturgy of Hours (priest, religious, deacon, third order members etc) you have to pray one of the accepted variations as it is written.

If you pray as private devotion, you can change, but this wont be the Liturgy of Hours if the change is intentional and significant.

The liturgy of Hours is still Office = chore, discipline

He pretty much said what I said earlier. That is:

If you are a priest, you must pray the LOTH as written, or another officially-approved substitute (I don’t know of any, but hey, it might exist).

If you are a lay person, you can pray LOTH as written, or you can change it if you want. But if you change it, it would cease to be LOTH, and become a private devotion. But why would you want to pray your own personal devotion, when with very little effort, you could pray with the entire church?

Let me be clear :o

If I pray all the prayers as written, and add my own in addition, then it becomes a private devotion?

I do indeed wish to pray with the Church. If necessary I would pray “my” prayers after the office…

Not where your additions are permitted (such as extra intercessions at Morning and Evening Prayer). If significant (I would think extra psalms, extra hymns, litanies, etc, or omitting hymns, antiphons, psalms, etc.) then yes, I think it becomes private devotion and ceases to be the Prayer of the Church.

What about it? Just pray it in Latin, using either the 1961 Breviarium Romanum or the 1985 Liturgia Horarum.

As for the English, it’s an exercise in obedience since I don’t understand Latin, at least not that well. I’m not bound to recite the Hours, but I also wish to pray with the Church (I vehemently disagree with the opinion that laypeople not bound to pray the office can do whatever they want). Therefore, my own opinions notwithstanding, I will pray in the form the Church has elected to use in English.

You may add an intention, but besides that, if you change anything without permission (from the rubrics) it becomes a private devotion. I would recommended praying “your” prayers after LOTH.

It is permitted to add our own personal intentions before the Our Father and after the General Intnetions while praying the Office. At least, that’s what I was taught to do as a 3rd Order Carmelite.

This is what we were taught as deacon candidates as well.👍
 
So its ok for me to pray the Glory Be in Latin for example?

Or the "Deus in adiutorium meum intende, Domine ad adiuvandum me festina?

Yes, as far as I know, because you are still using the approved text. I know of nothing that says you must pray the LOTH in only one language. I would assume it is in the same situation as the Mass. You may mix and match if you want.

It’s funny you bring that up. I frequently do the Gloria Patris in latin.

So…let me get this straight…if I mess something up in going back and forth in the book (Christian prayers) then it’s wrong?:confused: I recite the morning prayers to my husband as we go to work…but it’s not always the easiest thing to follow…and no I don’t have a smart phone so it’s not that I can use an app…

jeez…you think you are doing something good…🤷
