Liturgy of the hours resource

I’m not ready to invest in the 4 volume liturgy of the hours, but I would like to start making use of this daily office, though probably only the morning and evening prayers. I’m having a tough time deciding which volume to get. If possible, I would like to avoid something that is very abbreivated. I have a good priest friend who will help me figure out how to say it once I have a resource, but I don’t want to order one online without seeing what recommendations this group had.

This one and this one seem okay, and the first one comes with a “St. Joseph’s Guide” and a hymnal in back.

Who knows … any thoughts?

Either of your possibilities will work if you just want MP and EP. Shorter CP doesn’t have all the commons and propers for different saints’ days, but in no way is it “abbreviated”. You simply use the regular psalter on those days. It doesn’t need a guide since it assumes you know where you are in the church year (Lent, Advent, etc.)

If it were me I would probably buy *Christian Prayer *because it sounds like the brievary I use which is Daily Prayer from the Divine Office for Commonwealth Countries. The idea of it being in a zip cover is an excellent one; it keeps the book newer and cards etc aren’t always falling out.

To help me I bought *The Divine Office For Dodos *by Madeline Pecora Nugent but if you are getting a guide with *Christian Prayer *you probably won’t need it. I have also purchased an Ordo which sets out exactly what is to be celebrated on what day. Mine is for Australia and New Zealand but I presume there is something similar for the USA.

I say Morning (Lauds), Evening (Vespers) and Night Prayer (Compline) and I go online on Sundays and big feasts and say the Office of Readings.

Another way that you might want to look into is The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

for your purposes and for beginners in general I think Shorter Christian Prayer is the easiest way to learn, easiest to follow (the only page flipping is on Sundays and feasts). even more abbreviated, is Magnificat which includes morning and evening prayer, a reading, a saint, plus the order of the Mass and lectionary readings, and is the most compact and cost effective way to combine all these things (also great for travel). Catholic magazines often carry and advert from Jesuit missions that offers a small abbreviated LOTH prayerbook, that was my own intro, and has been useful in introducing my kids and other friends to LOTH, you could look for that too, but SCP is my recommendation.

If you buy the Christian Prayer, The Liturgy of the Hours, you’ll be fine.

With this is the version you can pray morning and evening prayer, with those who have the 4 Volume Set. Both versions are essentially the same for these hours.

In my OCDS group, we had members who either had the 4 Volume set or the CP. No problem!
